Tanmaya Bingham
statement:
I used to think I could demystify, unravel and reveal our dynamics and patterns as humans. The further I go down the creative path the more I realize this is a pointless quest because it is void of mystery. Although we often fear the unknown and unpredictable we overtly or covertly desire its magic.
My artwork's role, whether drawing, painting, sculpture or installation, is to confound and give a different and often macabre perspective on a world that is rapidly becoming homogenized. My motive is to highlight and exaggerate imperfections and unique qualities that individualize us rather then conforming to societal glorification of perfection and beauty.
This creates a platform for the viewer to be in a didactic exchange with himself or herself in order to reevaluate their perceptions.
Tanmaya’s artworks investigate the mechanics of human dynamics and the neurological processes that create patterns in our daily lives of which we are often not aware.
Tanmaya’s focus is on psychological, sociological and genealogical patterns that occur within the context of herself and her immediate circles. Although the content of her work is highly personal, the themes are universal. Each artwork or series of artworks explore these themes and how they can be altered in the given context to create new patterns and thus new results.
Tanmaya chooses herself and her family and friends as her primary subjects because she believes that we learn through example and the stories of others. Therefore, each artwork, whether painting, sculpture, drawing or installation, is laden with symbolism.
When these concepts are delivered in visual form they become a metaphoric map that is meaningful for both the subject and the viewer.
