Artist Statement
My work exists within the tradition of narrative figure painting. Primarily I work through oil paints, a medium which has a long history within both narrative and figure painting. I take a naturalistic approach to painting – that is to say that I work to depict objects and individuals in a natural setting through a method based in observation. As I paint I let my materials show their tactility while working to keep these mediums from overcoming and dominating the image. Like the mark making of the early impressionists, my work is a balancing act between maintaining a loose hand and keeping the marks laid down controlled and deliberate. My painting mixes the reality that I observe with a deconstructed – somewhat dream-like ambience. In this way I am able to present narratives that are subjective, stories that change and evolve with each interpreter.
