MARIE-JOSÉE ROY
When cold meets heat, mind and matter coexist: this is the work of Marie-Josée Roy.
Light and ethereal, while strong and imposing, Marie-Josée Roy’s art is intriguing and powerful.
Using metal as the canvas on which she communicates, the artist offers us multi-faceted
characters vibrant with truth.
The artist’s choice of aluminum as a medium is surprising. Reacting strongly to heat and cold,
Marie- Josée reveals gripping contrasts within, and upon, this metal. Using myriad techniques,
including engraving, painting, info-graphic image transfer, and drawing, she puts forward an
iconography that is timeless and strongly urban, while rich in technique and intention; resulting in
creative action – of mind, of word – relating to spirituality and human complexity.
Through her compilations – superimposed faces, text into organic objects, ‘inhabited’ body parts,
insects and creatures rooted in our own existence – Marie-Josée offers us a generous and
fascinating interpretation of profane imagery.
Juxtaposing timeless reflection with the materials and techniques of today, this artist displays a
wide range of emotions. She turns us from a simple representation of the subject to the reality of
its intention. She arouses enough doubt to inspire us, to admit our limits, and to see the infinite
emotional depth of our condition.
Through her work, this artist offers a very personal look into the necessity to contrast past with
present, urban with rustic, loving embrace with painful heartbreak. The art of Marie-Josée Roy
has reached a maturity and virtuosity that cannot help but capture the mind.
Marie-Josée Roy is one of Québec most celebrated artists; she lives and works in Trois-Rivières,
QC, Canada and her acclaimed work is part of private and public collections worldwide.
