Nuala O'Donovan
Artist Statement
My work combines regular pattern with the characteristics of irregular patterns and forms from nature. Each element of the pattern is individually made, the form is constructed slowly over a period of weeks or months. The finished forms are a result of an intuitive response to the direction that the pattern takes as well as the irregularity in the handmade elements of the pattern.
I have used the characteristics of irregular/fractal patterns in nature as a system of constraints or guidelines when making decisions about the forms: The patterns are regularly irregular. The patterns and form are self-similar. The pattern records a response to random events during the making process. The result of using the characteristics of fractal geometry in making decisions regarding the form of the sculptural pieces, is that the form is resolved but retains a sense of potential change. The viewer engages with the piece by allowing their own visual experiences to influence their view of the outcome of the form and its future possibilities. I hope that this aspect of my work also evokes the transitory quality of living organisms, combining traces of history, the present and the future, in the patterns that make up their surfaces and forms.
My decision to research patterns and forms from nature stemmed from my interest in the narrative quality of irregularities in patterns. The history behind a scarred or broken surface is what fascinates me. The evidence of a response to random events visible in patterns in nature, is testament to the ability of living organisms to recover, to respond, and to continue growing and changing. It is the imperfections in the patterns caused by a unique experience that are evidence of the life force in living organisms.

Paul Day
Amazing !
Paul Day (born 1967) is a British sculptor. His high-relief sculptures in terracotta, resin, and bronze have been exhibited widely in Europe and his work is known for its unusual approach to perspective.
Major works include:
Brussels — an urban comedy, a 25 metre long terracotta frieze in the Royal Galleries of Saint-Hubert in Brussels
The Battle of Britain Monument on the Victoria Embankment in London
The Meeting Place, a 9 metre (29.53 feet) tall bronze statue in St Pancras railway station in London, surrounded by a frieze
In 2008 a high-relief frieze was been added to the base of the Meeting Place sculpture as part of refurbishments at St Pancras, featuring images from the history of the Tube and train: people queuing on platforms or travelling in carriages; soldiers departing for war and returning injured, and repair works following the 7 July 2005 London bombings. The work was the object of controversy when first erected, as one panel depicted a commuter falling into the path of a train driven by the Grim Reaper. However, following discussions with London and Continental Railways (LCR), this panel was replaced with another.
Paul Day studied art at art schools in the United Kingdom at Colchester and Dartington, completing his training at Cheltenham in 1991. He now lives in a village near Dijon in France, with his wife, Catherine, a native of France. Their Anglo-French relationship is an explicit and repetitive reference in his works. The Meeting Place, which is modelled on an embrace between Paul and Catherine, standing as a metaphor for St. Pancras's role as the terminus of the rail link between England and France.
Another contemporary sculptor and critic, Antony Gormley, singled out The Meeting Place statue when he condemned the current public art works across the UK, stating: ".....there is an awful lot of crap out there."

France Fauteux
Born into a family of artists, France Fauteux was raised in a farmhouse near Shawinigan, Quebec. Thus developed her passion for animals and especially for birds. The elements of nature and the harmony that reigns in nature were for her an inexhaustible source of inspiration. She adored making comparisons between animal and human behavior.
At the Collège de Shawinigan in 1966, she was initiated into ceramics, learning the techniques of shaping and modeling,
In the mid-1970s, she familiarized herself with the throwing techniques at the "École de Céramique Julien" of Quebec. Her interest in clay technologies and surface treatments led her to conduct further research, in particular on earthenware. She enrolled in numerous advanced training sessions, notably at Queen’s University in Kingston, the University of Ottawa, and the "École-atelier de céramique de Québec" (formerly "La Maison du Potier"). These sessions brought her into contact with such renowned masters as Ken Ferguson, Cynthia Bringell, Richard Zakin, Robin Hooper, and Maurice Savoie.
In 1999, she attended the Ceramic Millennium international symposium in Amsterdam. She also received an education in management and administration.
She opened her workshop in 1979. France Fauteux has since taken part in about fifty exhibitions in some thirty galleries, museums, and cultural centers in Quebec and abroad, including the Shayder School of Art and Art History Gallery in Denver, Colorado, the Hammond Harkins Galleries in Bexley, Ohio, the "Maison du Québec" in Barcelona, the "Musée Marc-Aurèle Fortin" and the Art-Craft Gallery in Montreal and, finally, the Jeannine Blais gallery in North Hatley, Quebec. Her unique pieces belong to many public and private collections, notably the Maison Cartier collection in Montreal and the Fort Chambly collection, which feature her reproductions of 18th and 19th century cream ware. During many years, France Fauteux also produces limited editions of birds and animals in fine earthenware for distribution across Canada.
Since 1992, On many occasions, she has taught at the "École-atelier de céramique de Québec" and has also sat on its board of directors. France Fauteux is often asked to sit on art-craft juries. She occasionally gives talks and serves as a reviewer for the Conseil des métiers d’art du Québec.
The Lovards - here
History of a creation
Here I created an imaginary people of eighteen fabulous characters, Among this people, everyone has a special personality and role. They inhabit a wonderful country, designed just for them.
One day, I consulted my eighteen characters and we found that they together form a small nation with its own history. We have chosen to tell you about this country, its way of life, and its core beliefs.
I gave them a body and life.
I gave them an idyllic country, worthy of them.
I gave them a real challenge to meet.
I gave them “tenderness”
Welcome to the Island of Love, among the Lovards.

“In increasingly urbanized and nature-deprived societies around the world our most intimate connection with nature tends to be with plants and animals that we have drastically altered through the process of domestication. Wild animals have been turned into pets, genetically sculpted into sweeter, cuter, less dangerous versions of themselves, permanently altered by mans effort to fulfill our own need for relentless love, assistance, amusement and companionship.”.

Zsuzsa Monostory
I was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary, where I received my formal education and PhD in Biology. I came to Canada in 1989 to work in a research institute. I stumbled upon clay by chance, and the engagement became so strong, it ended my career as a biologist. In retrospect, it was the best thing that ever could have happened to me.
I joined a potters guild in 1992 and met a group of women who shared a common passion for raku. This was my choice of firing for many years. Raku provided me with the finished surface that best reflected my artistic vision for my sculptural pieces. It was with this group of women that I had my first exhibition.
I set up a home studio where I have worked alone for the past 14 years. I connect with other potters at shows, conferences, exhibitions and workshops. In 2003 I participated in a workshop where we built and fired a wood kiln. After the first firing, I was hooked as it added a whole new colour to my palette.
In 2006 I traveled with 3 fellow North American wood fire potters to participate in a residency program at the International Ceramic Studio in Kecskemet Hungary. It was another great experience. Upon returning to Canada, I could hardly wait to get back to my studio to make new pieces for my next firing. I was thrilled to be part of a wood firing collective here in Canada, where we not only fire together, but we laugh, connect, socialize and enjoy each others company. We had our first exhibition in 2007 and titled it “Women Who Wood”.
Working alone for 14 years has been wonderful, but it has been lonely. In 2007, I decided to join The Williams Mill Art Centre where I enjoy the company and community of other full time artists.
I continue to be inspired by all things living. Perhaps it is my background in biology that makes the human form and behaviour most intriguing to me. I strive to bring the gesture of human connections and relationships to life in my work.
