Asit Patnaik

Born 1968 in Orissa, spent his childhood in Cuttack and completed his Bachelor s Degree in fine art from Government College of Art and Crafts at Khalikote and Master’s from BHU Varanasi. A semi realistic painter his narratives revolve around partly clad men and women engrossed in their emotions. Human psyche and interpersonal relationships of people in society, is the underlying theme that engages the artists interest. Marked for its seductive look his figuration appears dramatic and harmonious in bold colours. Often working
in series, the complex and open ended postures of his people bring forth issues of human predicament including conflicts between young and old. Recipient of several awards including gold medal at a National Youth Festival and from Banaras Hindu University, Asit has exhibited in nearly 30 solo and group shows at national level in India and abroad including the 10th annual Harmony show, where he was featured as the youngest participant in the ‘emerging artists section. He has participated in numerous camps and his work is held in various public and private collections in the country and overseas including South Korea, Australia, Bangladesh and South Africa. The artist is currently based in Delhi.

NILADRI PAUL

I have been painting for as long as I can remember. Even before I knew it was called art . From the moment I first held a pencil in my hand , I started doodling , much to the exasperation of my parents and teachers. I would draw on anything and everything , from blank papers , walls , newspapers , sand  and of course sketch books also at times , when provided. So it was a natural progression to join the art college and learn the fine nuances of the craft . And thus started the colourful journey of my life.

From the first solo show itself  , I have followed my heart  and painted whatever inspired me to take up the colors and splash them on the canvases , conveying my very own individualistic expression. I have always been drawn to powerful forms , strong lines , sweeping brush strokes , and bold , vibrant colors. Freedom and spontaneity have been important to me in my personal life as well and therefore animate all my paintings too.
A constant fascination with the performing arts lead me to begin the still ongoing endeavour of translating the ever evolving movements , rhythm , and sound onto my canvases. My contemporary application and sensibilities combined with this hugely complex and all encompassing subject lead to a style of painting that bridged the gap between figurative and abstract art. The energy of my pigments convey a primitive force and energy of cheerful optimism that i myself feel .

My art is not a social critique of our times , as I strongly feel that i am artist and my language ought to be simple and forthright enough for everybody to understand and relate to , rather than just being read and applauded by a few art critics only.

The beast within ! That is the thought that comes to mind when one is confronted with H.R. Das's bulls. There is an empathy that he evokes in the viewer when faced with his canvases. They exude the power, pride and heart of the beast that is a part of us all.
H.R. Das captures the essence of village life through his amazing cattle. His bulls and cows don't just exist but pulsate with energy. Whether yoked or free, they effortlessly express the sheer strength and beauty of the beast. H.R. Das has taken the bull and made it his own, one cannot dispute the fact that he has a distinctly unique style of portraying this magnificent animal that is so rooted in the Indian culture and psyche. In fact, some may say that he has taken a common place animal and given it a heroic status in the manner that it takes on an almost human persona. One can relate to the beast's agony, its joy of life, its anger and one can fear it as well.
While some artists tend to overlook the background, treating it as a mere support for their central theme; H.R. Das treats it like a stage setting in front of which his characters perform. They may recede and be dismissed as props, but his backgrounds still command attention, the intricate tapestry effect and mute lines provide a vibrant milieu that serve to highlight the interactions between the main players of his magnum opus.
H.R. Das continues to explore his roots and the traditional way of Indian village life. His characters seem to be acting out an unwritten scene against a backdrop of rich tapestry that bears mute testimony to the gamut of emotions that flow from their inert yet expressive forms. H.R. Das comes across as more of a director than an artist, putting forth a visual display of raw emotions and power.

Ostinelli and Priest - Gaynor Ostinelli and Paul Priest

"Ostinelli Priest

Specialising in ceramic animal sculpture, Ostinelli & Priest produce work which captures the spirit and essence of their animal subjects with modelling which is almost sketch-like in its spontaneity. The outcome is work which is light and inspired by the moment, adding originality and humour in which ever setting it is displayed.

Their inspiration comes from a wide variety of wild-life, including horses, hounds, hens, bulls, hogs, and woolves. Sculpt Gallery can also co-ordinate bespoke commissions on behalf of clients, with prices for commissions starting at around £650.

Ostinelli & Priest were chosen in 2012 from amongst 60,000 artists to take part in an event organised by Saatchi OnLine Gallery to showcase, worldwide, 1000 curator-selected works of art. They have also been shortlisted for Wildlife Artist of the Year 2013, which is open worldwide to wildlife artists."

Artists Statement

The perfect opportunity to see two heads working as one. Drawing on our individual talents and strengths we have established a range of work that is both popular and collectable.
Inspiration is drawn from human animal and bird form on an ever changing basis. We use texture, rhythm and colour into the clay to convey movement presence and humour into the work, these qualities being all important in any piece.
Our workshops and demonstrations have proved immensely popular, educational but fun, embracing all our making techniques.

Background History

Paul Priest studied graphic design, illustration and photography, working in this facet of the art world for a short time before realising ‘the mistake’.

Work with ceramic sculpture became my obsession as a result of attending an adult-ed pottery course and the subsequent establishment of my own studio.

Now a professional member of the CPA and other societies it was some six years ago I met Gaynor Ostinelli, and over the following period together we have developed our working partnership.  Still creating work individually as well as jointly we have moved to exhibiting our work in galleries and festivals as well as holding demonstrations and workshops.

Misha Borisoff
Misha Borisoff was born in Moscow in 1950, the only child of Serge Borisoff who was a famous architect and professor at the prestigious Moscow High University of Art at Stroganov. Misha spent his childhood studying art books since the time he was 4 years old, learning what art was about - not so much its styles but its meaning. By 1967 he entered higher education at the High University of Art where he fine-tuned his brand of Russian cubism, relying heavily on luminescence. Misha started to work as an artist while he was still at the academy and he had his first exhibition in 1970 followed by a long succession of exhibitions in France, Romania, Estonia, Finland, Holland, Germany, and England.

Sofie Muller

Sofie Muller’s work is confusing. With immense craftsmanship she gives all her images a deceptive aesthetic that burns with an unexpectedly deep presence. The impact of the formative years of a human life are cast in bronze or drawn with smoke and they show how imposed standards, a single event in your adolescence or painful memories can cause an upheaval and lay new foundations. Subtle and hidden below the surface of each image, filtering through behind a closed look. The characters in the artist’s oeuvre share the same inner defect or scar, the same inherent complexity and contradiction. Never obvious stereotypes, but a complicated labyrinth of resistance and acquiescence, despair and certainty. These images speak in a burningly relevant voice. They bear witness to what remains ineradicable and leaves its traces. Even now, and later too. Like fire. And smoke.

Patrick Lee

Western Project is proud to present the second solo exhibition by Los Angeles artist Patrick Lee. After a successful show in New York last year, the artist will present seven recent large scale drawings and a new video project. His continuing series, Deadly Friends, mines the transient and elusive definitions of masculinity. The artist has met and photographed hundreds of men on the streets of America over the past decade. Like a scientist, Lee has collects images of thousands of examples of physical attributes: scars, facial hair, tattoos, body muscle, talismans, etc. His primary interest is in the artifice off masculinity; the characteristics men acquire for money, sex, power and essential survival. Using photographs, Lee draws his subjects from numerous images; as composites or masks, using subtle or often times not subtle, physical traits and features.

It is Lee’s masterful draftsmanship which conveys his understanding of his subjects and the core issue of masculinity. Each image is hand drawn without Photoshop or digital assistance. Akin to a sculptor, the artist invests each facial pore and hair with microscopic detail so the image resonates as a complete emotional picture; an internal and external illumination. In the lineage of Chuck Close and Manet’s realism, Lee forges a contemporary investigation of class and gender roles. His conceptual drawings are compelling mirrors of our societal desire for alpha – heroic strength and control. Yet his subjects are not ideal figures for they embody other human traits such as pride, anger, or pain. As complex portraits, Lee’s images expose the illusion of ‘maleness’ as acquired, not necessarily inherent; external gender characteristics as ever changing and adaptable according to need; a game of adaption and replication to an end.

Lee is currently included in, Drawings for the New Century, at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. He has exhibited at Ameringer McEnery Yohe in New York, the Francis Young Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, North Carolina, Maureen Paley Gallery, London, and the Marc Selwyn Gallery in Los Angeles. He is in the collection of the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas. He is also a recipient of the Peter S. Reed Foundation grant for 2006.

YUROZ
YUROZ BIOGRAPHY

By Matthew Lutt

Close your eyes.

Yuroz is the artist of the people. Lovers, musicians, poets, athletes, the homeless, and even refugees fill his canvases, drawing forth the spectrum of emotions and moods that reside deep in the human soul. Yuroz amazing ability to bring this soulful human quality to fruition through his art stems from his own life experiences.

Born in Soviet Armenia in 1956, Yuroz was only ten years old when he entered the renowned Akop Kodjoyan school of Art in the Armenian capital of Yerevan. After graduating with honors, Yuroz gathered up his incredible talents and entered the Yerevan University of Art and Architecture. His natural aptitude for architecture can be seen to this day in every aspect of his art. Yuroz most recent sculpture, the life-sized

"A Delicate Balance," displays an artist with an implicit knowledge and understanding of how angles and lines must converge to create the lovely curves of the human form.
Even though he was a master architect and a blooming artist, Yuroz political views clashed with the Soviet regime in Armenia, and he realized that freedom was the only path to his true artistic potential. In order to find this path, Yuroz became a refugee. He married a woman who gained entrance into the United States, but Yuroz himself was not allowed to emigrate for seven years.
Those seven years imbued him with a compassion and understanding for all refugees seeking new homes and fresh beginnings. Fittingly, in January 2000 Yuroz was chosen by the United Nations to be the official artist for their 50th anniversary stamp honoring refugees worldwide, and in November his mural was unveiled at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. Through this mural we can see the grand panorama of Yuroz vision, where individual and racial differences slide away, and the courage of refugees and humanity as a whole is brought to the surface. Later this year his magnificent testament to human courage will be sent to the General Assembly Building in Geneva, Switzerland, to be installed permanently as a part of their collection.

When the years of waiting finally came to an end, Yuroz was reunited with his wife in the United States. But the long period of separation combined with his tireless dedication to art led to conflicts at home, and eventually Yuroz set out on his own. After struggling for years to achieve and enjoy the freedom America offered he found himself homeless in the land of opportunity. Even though he had no home, hope was his constant companion, and Yuroz continued to create art with the supplies of the streets. Napkins and cardboard were conjured into canvas, and discarded pens were transformed into paintbrushes.

Yuroz Los Angeles street friends were portraits filling the gallery of his mind with the beauty and simplicity of life. Like the refugees who would later populate his United Nations mural, Yuroz was able to capture the survivor mentality of his homeless brethren when they made their way onto canvas, a reflection of his own burning desire to create art in his new home. With the success of this early "Hollywood Boulevard" series,Yuroz was walking his dream path.
Since that time, Yuroz art has reached new heights and continues to climb. But even with all of his growth and success as an artist, Yuroz has never lost sight of his own humble beginnings, and he has donated the proceeds from a variety of originals and limited editions to numerous causes and foundations. In 1995 he created "The Harlequin's Gift" for Comic Relief, an organization that alerts audiences to the growing
American homeless population. Also, 2001 will mark the fourth consecutive year that Yuroz will be the official artist for the Suzuki Rock ÔNÕ Roll Marathon in San Diego, and he has once again created an original oil for sale at silent auction to benefit the Leukemia Society of America.
"Taste My Wine" is Yuroz first serigraph of the new century, a painting he created in conjunction with the launch of his own line of wine, which will feature his artwork on the label of Benevolence, a cabernet blend from a 1999 California vintage. Benevolence will make its debut this November during the Las Vegas Odyssey 2001: A Celebration of Wine, Food, and Art, and Yuroz will be the official artist for the event. Also, later this year Yuroz will be meeting with the Pope about a ceiling painting project for an Armenian Church in Glendale, California, which was blessed by the Pope.
Even with such momentous events upcoming, Yuroz never forgets the small joys of sounding our feelings and
moods through his art. A producer who was in the studio recently to interview Yuroz for a national commercial experienced his signature "art massage," which involves drawing on the clothing people are wearing. When Yuroz finished his "massage," the producer was left speechless by the finished product on the back of her T-shirt. Loss of speech is a common reaction to Yuroz art. We are stunned by the human quality captured in such a simple way, and words cannot express the emotions Yuroz stirs in our souls.

" Without artists there is no gallery, no museum and no critic. Unfortunately the machine (galleries, critics, and museums) has become too dominating on the artist's mind and life and this affects what they create.

An artist's obligation is to create and support his love ones. To me, the person is considered to be successful if he can afford to wake up in the morning and do what he loves to do. Successful or not, I wish there were more artists in the world. I don't remember any time in the history that world suffered because there were too many artists  "

Yuroz portret  " I think one of the greatest gifts of life is the ability to see everything around us.  And for me it only gets better when I can create the impression of my own realty by playing with colors, canvas, and texture. "

" I strongly believe that everyone needs to experience creating music, creating a painting, and creating his or her own poetry at least once ."

" The creative process makes us stronger. It helps us to discover a dimension within ourselves that no one can take away from us.  And that also helps us to enjoy being alive... appreciating life through these new dimensions."

" Art is not a luxury, it is a necessity! "

"I don't want you to think when you look at my paintings, I want you to feel, to get excited,"

" I think the painters are separated into two groups.  One simply loves to create and finds pleasure in spending time doing it. The other group has no choice, they simply can't help it, it is as necessary for them as oxygen is for others. "

" Drawing is a skill of communication between people, the same as sign language or  verbal communication.  It needs to be nurtured from a very early age and encouraged during the entire lifespan of the person."

" I think one of the greatest gifts of life is the ability to see everything around us.  And for an artist it only gets better when we can create the impression of our own realty by playing with colors, canvas, brush ...."

"Unfortunately, there have always been religious fanatics," he said. "And I don't believe only the Muslim side is fanatical. The Christians went on crusades and wiped out countries centuries ago." It sort of chooses you and you just go with it."

"You don't choose the path , it sort of chooses you and you just go with it."

"I believe art is an incredible, beautiful religion . When I paint, it's me and my vision of the world. You become some sort of a preacher."

Rusudan Khizanishvili (gobejishvili )

"Artist of the Week- Rusudan Khizanishvili If the true skill of an artist lies in their ability to work outside their chosen style, then Rusudan Khizanishvili has proven himself to be extremely competent. By using, adapting and merging a variety of styles the artist has created a portfolio that should greatly impress any viewer. She paints aching portraits that stare out at you with questioning eyes, crafted in expressive thick oil applied with vigour. Yellow figures leave, or run from, disjointed rooms. The perspectives are painted out of synch which gives the work an intense and unnerving atmosphere. In other pictures landscapes are robbed of their assurance by a think, hazy layer or mist which cloaks them with doubt and robs them of the familiarity usually present in the physical world. The sinister underworld of the evening is explored in a series of striking, beautiful paintings. The artist mixes together shadowy, barely visible whites, sleepy blues and nightmarish greens to create a darkly seductive atmosphere. Restless shapes cast the scenes into chaos as ghostly figures watch on from the peripheries. The still life works drip sensuously with colour, life and stylistic innovation. Each image draws the viewer in and demands a second look. These are not paintings for the faint hearted, as attitude and talent work together, hand in hand. Inspired by the old masters, the artist creates semi-mythical, allegorical ideals transported into contemporary settings. This gifted Georgian painter creates works of posing figures, captured brilliantly against glowing, vibrant backgrounds. In another nod to the history of art a Cubist figure reclines and drifts off into a dream. In pure abstraction she masterfully takes on the inherent qualities of the shapes and colours, adding small details whenever she sees fit. The joy of rain is represented with a riotous collision of colour that makes every inch of the canvas feel alive. A wonderful artist, who we are delighted to bring to a wider audience, and a worthy choice for our artist of the week."

Education
"
Rusudan Khizanishvili is a young contemporary artist working in Tbilisi, the Georgian capital. With influences drawn from great artists such as Gauguin and Cezanne, Khizanishvili's work visibly acknowledges the history of painting and the paintings of the great masters. Her confident use of colour, combined with a palpable and often sensuous handling of oil paint demonstrates a maturity beyond her twenty seven years. Rusudan's approach to both the handling of paint and compositional construction reflects a healthy knowledge of what has come before her, while at the same time clearly display a contemporary set of values and codes of practice. Graduating with a painting degree from the Tbilisi state Academy of Art, Rusudan went on to complete an MA in Media in 2005."

Hongnian Zhang

Hongnian Zhang is a Chinese American oil painter who works in the Western academic tradition. Works by this gifted artist have been exhibited and acquired by museums, galleries, corporations and private collectors across the globe.

Growing up in China, Mr. Zhang became accomplished in art at a young age. He was one of the top students at the highly selective and prestigious Central Art Academy’s Affiliated High School in Beijing. The instruction there was rigorous, paving the road for his future success. Unfortunately, the Cultural Revolution broke out and temporarily forestalled his art career. In 1970, Zhang and his classmates were sent to a forced labor camp in the remote countryside. He labored there for 4 years and creating art was prohibited.

In 1974, Hongnian returned to Beijing and soon became a rising star. As the youngest artist ever to be appointed to the Beijing Art Academy, he created large-scale oil paintings that caught the public’s attention and heart. His innovative oils helped develop “Scar Art”, an important artistic movement in China that examined the painful memories of the Cultural Revolution. Two of his “Scar Art” paintings, No!, and We Were Young Then, were acquired by China’s National Art Museum for their permanent collection. In 1979 he was elected to the All China Artists Association. He was the youngest artist at that time to have achieved the honor. In 1984, his painting, Preparing For Winter, one of the first oil paintings depicting Tibetan life, won the Bronze Medal. It was also acquired by the National Art Museum for their permanent collection. At the same time, Hongnian was accepted to the extremely selective Central Art Academy’s Master Degree program.

The following year, Zhang came to the United States to broaden his knowledge of Western art. In 1986, he was one of the five artists in New York’s Grand Central Art Galleries show, “Realism from China.” This ground-breaking exhibit introduced Chinese oil painting and sculpture to the Western world. Art News and CBS were among the media groups acknowledging the show with interviews and favorable reviews. Hongnian continued exploring Tibetan pastoral themes with his 1988 solo show, also at Grand Central.

In 1991, Hongnian moved to Woodstock, New York and continued creating realistic works. He expanded his subject matter to include Chinese and American historical paintings, and eventually contemporary American life. Several of his large-scale epic paintings on Chinese history have been featured in National Geographic Magazine. Four of these paintings were purchased by the National Geographic Society for their permanent collection.

In 2000, Zhang and his wife, artist Lois Woolley, co-wrote The Yin Yang of Painting. This book explains his philosophy and methods of painting. In 2008, China’s Ren-Min Mei-Shu Publishing Company selected Zhang as one artist in their Living Masters monograph series on Chinese Contemporary Distinguished Oil Painters.

Hongnian Zhang has taught oil painting in America for many years, at both the graduate program of New York Academy and the Woodstock School of Art. Recently, Mr. Zhang accepted a position as Professor of Oil Painting at Fudan University’s Shanghai Institute of Visual Art. He is currently working with other Chinese artists to establish an Association for Epic and Historical Painting. He divides his time between China and the United States.

Francys Flanagan

"Words, strung like pearls on a page, paint a picture. Music tells the soul a story. Colours and shapes on a canvas make the heart sing. Three doors into a magical and lovely place that God's gift, imagination, allows us to enter. As a child I strolled at will through these doors and lived in that place. As I "grew up", I never left it.
In 1977 God gave me another gift in the person of artist Dick Turner. Dick gave a fortunate few the tools needed in order to use paint and canvas to take others into that world of beauty and peace. A world that might catch at your imagination and cause you to ask, "What if....."

Francys Flanagan is a painter who is driven by a passion for self-expression through art. Her works are often noted for their unique style, elegance and technique. Francys paints with a style that blends precise realism with impressionism. Her use of vibrant colors and soft edges make her work an excellent choice for a wide range of projects and purposes.

Francys is accomplished in using the traditional glazing technique first developed by the old masters. Her work has been influenced by several outstanding instructors. However the greatest influence on her art was the late Dick Turner of Houston, Texas.

"From the time I was a small girl I knew I would be an artist. I just didn't know what kind. I read book after book about painters, musicians, dancers, and writers. Then in 1977, through a chance meeting with artist Dick Turner, I knew that I too would be a painter. I was so overwhelmed by Dick's work and mental approach to it that I immersed myself, soul and body, in that pursuit. I studied with Dick from 1977 until 1982, taking 5 and 6 classes a week at his private art school, sometimes driving several times a week from my home at the time in Sherman Texas to his studio in Houston."

Francys has also received instruction from William Reese, William Henry Earle, Carolyn Anderson, Greg Greutz, Roberta Carter Clark, Ray Vinella, Jean Chambers, Scott Burdick and Daniel Greene. She is presently represented by Prellop Gallery in Salado, Texas and Visual Expressions Gallery in Cedar Hill, Texas.

Francys teaches group and private lessons at her studio in Ferris, Texas and is an instructor at the VECAS Art School in Cedar Hill. She is available for Club Demonstrations and workshops.

Timur Akhriev

Timur Akhriev was born in 1983 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Timur was influenced by art at an early age thanks to his father, internationally acclaimed artist, Daud Akhriev. The talent that Timur possessed was recognized by his father, so naturally Timur studied painting under him. Timur studied painting and drawing from the 6th grade at the St. Petersburg Iagonson Art Middle and High School. At this school most of the instructors also teach at the Repin Academy of Fine Arts.
