Brianna Angelakis



Brianna Marie Angelakis (b. 1990) is an American artist. She was born in Massachusetts and moved to New Hampshire during her early teen years. She moved to Florida at the end of her high school years, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. Angelakis currently attends Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL. She will graduate in the Spring of 2013 with a BA in the Visual Arts, a BA in English, and a minor in Illustration. She will be returning to Flagler College in the Fall of 2013 as an alumnus to complete her BFA in Fine Arts.

My perspective and experiences as a female in society dominates the subjects of my paintings. In my work, I juxtapose the female figure with the wildness of nature to create a sense of female liberation. Additionally, as an artist, I find straight lines and structure confining, causing me to return to organic shapes. Through the emphasis of bright colors, texture, and fluidity, my female figures become powerful subjects in a chaotic world. My color palette assists in creating a mood which reflects the emotion of the figure, which in turn corresponds with her environment. I frequently return to a combination of cool colors, establishing a sense of eeriness in my works.

My artistic inspiration stems from my love for literature and poetry in addition to my own experiences as a young woman. I am generally inspired by works of literature which represent the female through positive and negative, powerful and supernatural imagery. In my work, I expand the Romantic idea of nature as a sublime element, often portraying the landscape as a surreal element uncontained by man. By emphasizing the weather and other natural phenomenon, I expand on the disorderly freedom of the natural world. Similarly, my female figures wildly flaunt their hair and dress. The unruly landscape then parallels the depiction of the uncanny female figure. Moreover, through the isolation of my female figures, I create an emotional relationship between the figure and the observer.

Angelakis' artworks have been exhibited in various galleries located throughout north and central Florida including the Cummer Museum of Arts and Gardens. She will be showing nationally for the first time this December at Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco and Light Grey Art Lab in Minneapolis. Additionally, her works have been published internationally through print and online magazines including PoetsArtists Magazine, MISC Magazine, and the coverstory for Northeast Florida's Magazine, Folio Weekly.

Alos began to admire art at an early age and spent much of his time drawing. In his teens and twenties he spent many years dedicated to painting graffiti. Erik continues to paint producing new surrealistic and figurative works, sometimes infuenced by cartoons and American pop culture. Alos lives and works in Los Angeles, California where he was born in 1978.

Billy Norrby is a New York based artist. After spending several years working for the video game industry, he moved to New York to pursue a painting career. He graduated from SVA in 2010. Billy Norrby’s artwork has been featured in a multitude of galleries and several annuals such as Spectrum, 3×3 and the Society of Illustrators. His first solo exhibit will be at the Copro Gallery at April 16th 2011.

Artiste autodidacte, je suis né à Fougères en Bretagne.

Ayant exploité la formalisation réaliste à partir de matériaux divers pendant plusieurs années, donnant naissance à des montages monumentaux dont la cohésion des particules tenait à leur seul poids, j’aborde aujourd’hui une figuration plus expressive.

Le bronze, par sa noblesse et sa force évocatrice, est devenu mon matériau de prédilection pour transmettre un message plus intense. Je crois depuis toujours à l’implication de l’artiste dans la création du monde de demain. C’est pourquoi ma démarche artistique tend vers l’évocation pour le spectateur de notions apaisantes, inspirant le calme et la sérénité de l’âme. Le corps féminin me semble idéal pour communiquer l’essence même de ces qualités.












Mes sculptures, bien que d’une féminité débordante ne sont jamais plus que sensuelles, et abordables par tout public. Ma représentation du nu féminin est délicate et expressive tout en restant contemporaine.

Approcher ces «particules de vie» permet au spectateur non seulement d’admirer l’esthétisme des contours, mais aussi de percevoir la sensibilité dont j’investis chacune de mes créations. Soucieux du moindre détail, j’espère autant séduire par la qualité et la finesse de mes sculptures que par les valeurs qu’elles transmettent.

I dreamt of eternal love ever since my childhood.

I found my Very Own, and I want to tell you that love is a very refined and complex instrument, and you can write your symphony of eternal love only if you are a master musician.

Sculpture of this artist now already page in the history of skill. Page one-piece, finished and thoroughly edited by it by itself, even with the life. It was happy person and real man, who carries full responsibility for everything which makes. About this speak its works — by clearness of silhouettes, in the state of adjustment of lines, by the accordion of forms. The sculptures Of Arsen are completed with these lung, elegant craftsmanship, with this sparkling vital force, that reliably shield the confronting after them long-standing labor, the mastery of handicraft habits, meditation, the searches, victories and failures.

Arsen in thirty three years of the life, tempered it on the earth, created its unique peace — being sparked by happiness, that philosophizes, that weeps, that moans from its filled love. Sculpture whether this, either rare intricate adornments or the precious toys, into which it cannot be played a little, because they themselves do play with each other and with us?

The pantheon of its heroes is erected in the bright number, which very reminds of the characters of comedy Dale [Arte]. Although the similarity this only removed, is faster by analogy, than actually. Beauties and buffoons, originated by the fantasy of artist, skillfully fulfill their roles in the refined plays. Their faces are hidden under the masks, but the speech of poses and gestures is maximally expressive and precise. Arsen speaks in the language of the bodies of its heroes. Perhaps, this is the most important and most ingenious plastic motion, found by sculptor.

Here is chute — it, certainly, king. Silver of detail shines, the bends of body are elegant, the turning of head is elegant. It — perfection. It is splendid, as it is splendid and its cracker — queen. And nevertheless it has entirely another nature and another role: in this complex role there is much text. In the left hand it holds large key from the secret door in the happiness or from its own heart. But the palm of right hand is bent in the mysterious gesture — asserting and questioning simultaneously. It distinctly is turned to the spectator, in this case demonstrating the perfection of its forms and the elegance of motions. About which she speaks — each will hear itself.

That which will be able or will want. But here actress plays night, expressively tarrying, it fixes look into the celestial spheres. And the craftsmanship of reincarnation demonstrates, depicting day — it stopped, after squatting for short leisure, it recovered breath, it turned away face-mask from the burning sun.

Favored by sculptor-director the genre of erotic play — hymn of sensuality, life and happiness of love. The range of interests and creative possibilities of sculptor is wide, it freely is turned with any theme. It is democratic and intelligible to spectator in the most diverse manifestations of its topical experiments and plastic searches. The tariff, established on one of the streets Of city Zelenogorsk amuses numerous spectators by the amusement mask, which looks out of the hearth of tail, and in the adjacent square — small bronze mouse lurked under the loaves of bread, lying on the pedestal. And here, through the road — entirely by different, the very serious monument to the victims of Russian- Finnish war. This is the last work of artist, who prematurely left from the life.

Quite lyric, philosophically filled thing, which plays by senses and by the refined lines — sculpture “a little sun in the cold water”. Sad theatrical mask, framed by hand- branches, as if by the laurel garland of antique god. This work can be considered the generalizing symbol of entire its skill, the emblem of original and surprising theater, theater of the sculpture Of Arsen.

Dashi Namdakov - Даши Намдаков




Dashi Namdakov is a Russian sculptor, graphic artist and jeweller, Member of the Russian Union of Artist. Born in 1967 in Siberia near Chita which is close to the Russian-Chinese border; graduated from the Krasnoyarsk Institute of Fine Arts. In 2003 Dashi was awarded a silver medal of the Russian Academy of Arts for the works exhibited in Moscow.
Dashi’s first solo show in a Siberian city of Irkutsk in 2000 became a sensation in the art world. The flawless plasticity and “jeweler’s” precision of his works have soon won the author the reputation of a leading Russian sculptor.
Dashi’s one-man shows in major Russian museums and abroad won him a universal acclaim: the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Museum of Oriental Art in Moscow, Tibet House U.S., the Beijing World Art Museum, the Guangzhou Museum of Art, the Kasteyev National Art Museum in Kazakhstan, etc.
The heritage of the Central Asian nomadic empire influences the author’s works. Nomads interacted with the terrestrial, celestial and underground worlds following common everlasting laws of transformation, death and miraculous revival. This sacral process is reflected in the dynamics of Dashi’s sculptural compositions, their philosophy corresponds to the true idea of historical monuments. In Dashi’s creative work traditions of Asia and Europe amazingly blend together.
In 2004 Dashi’s first jewelry collection was created. Wild birds and animals, insects and anthropomorphic creatures participate in the process of creation of the modern art. “Animalistic” genre of Dashi’s art is not meant to provoke the audience but is a natural expression of the author’s credo to portray a human world as a part of the nature.
Dashi addresses the subject of Genghis Khan, creating the great Mongolian leader in bronze and acting as Art Director in the film “Mongol” (2007) by a film director Sergey Bodrov-senior. The film was nominated for Oscar as the best foreign language film and won six Nika Awards in Russia. Dashi received the Nika award for the best art direction.

"Michael Parkes is America's leading Magic Realist painter and printmaker.
Though he studied graphic art and painting at the University of Kansas, his unique style evolved very much in isolation, after a period in which he gave up the practice of art altogether and went off to India in search of philosophical illumination: born in 1944, he was very much of the hippie generation.

Earlier on, he had painted in the generally Abstract Expressionist style normal among his teachers, but after his pause for reflection he began to draw and paint in a meticulous style of detailed representation which would enable him to give full expression to his inner world of images.

The style was in principle realistic, the subject matter magical, and Magic Realism has characterised his work ever since.

He has studied deeply in esoteric doctrine of the East and the West, and his imagery is drawn from a range of wisdoms including the Cabalistic and the Tantric, but embodied in forms from his own imagination which are immediately accessible. Here strange beasts encounter mysterious winged women, good and evil fight out their immemorial conflict (though who can be perfectly sure which is which?), and in this weightless environment worlds are unmade and remade nearer to the heart's desire.

Even as a student Parkes was fascinated by various graphic processes, and in recent years he has become highly proficient in the difficult medium of the colour stone lithograph.

Gaylord Ho


Gaylord Ho was born April 11, 1950, in Hsin-Wu, Taiwan. Born to poor farmers Gaylord spent most of his free time helping, along with his brother, with the chores of scratching out a living on a small rice farm in middle Taiwan. His parents, while certainly not well off financially, were accepting and loving of their children and believed strongly in education. Gaylord was sent off to the public school system as soon as he was of age. He was not, however, relieved of his duties on the farm and spent many afternoons and holidays wading in the rice paddies pulling weeds and grass, planting rice plants or harvesting the latest crops. Water buffalo was the main farm equipment of the day.

After attending the local school system, Gaylord entered and graduated from the National Taiwan Academy of Arts. His parents were tolerant of his artistic leanings; Gaylord says that his first foray into art was with crayons on his mother’s kitchen wall. They were not, however, convinced that art was a good occupation or a good way to make a living. Gaylord was “called” and would not sway from his goal to be an artist. Gaylord graduated at the top of his class. His student sculptures won the National Sculpture Exhibition. While acclaimed as a student, Gaylord realized that he still had to find a way for his art to provide a living.

After fulfilling his military obligation, all Taiwan boys must spend two years in military service after graduating college, he decided that he could advance his sculpting skills by studying under some of the great Japanese sculptors of the day. He traveled to Seto City, Japan, outside of Nagoya, and lived as an apprentice there during 1975 and again in 1977. The opportunity to learn was great. The conditions under which he lived and learned were not so great. Gaylord explains that he ate miso soup every day for breakfast, for lunch and then again for dinner. As a young man it was barely enough to subsist upon and he still complains that his stomach was hungry every day.

The experience, however, gave him sharpened sculpting skills and an in depth knowledge of the techniques of porcelain and ceramic manufacturing. Back in Taiwan, he used these newly acquired skills to gain employment at a well known porcelain factory. During this period, in 1979, he established the Nomiso Porcelain Design Center. I’ve often wondered if the original name meant, No Miso, for no more miso soup. In 1986 the name was changed to Gaylord Design Corporation. Gaylord Design is celebrating their 25th anniversary of business this year.

Over the years Gaylord has enjoyed much commercial success. He is world famous in the gift and collectibles industry for his numerous successful designs. He has been nominated “Artist of the Year” many times by the collectibles industry. He has been honored by such groups as the National Association of Limited Edition Dealers for his award winning sculptures. He has won awards for his individual sculpts almost every year for the past twenty years. Having achieved the financial success that he needed to support his family, Gaylord now is directing his full energy into satisfying the artist within himself. The artist who, as a student created art just for fun, is now being realized but at the hands of an accomplished masterfully skilled sculptor.

Gaylord travels extensively when not sculpting. He shares his time between two homes, one in Chungli, Taiwan and one in Palos Verdes, California. He also spends time in his satellite sculpting studio in Shanghai, China. It is set in a beautiful public park area and allows him time to concentrate on his quiet sculpting job while also practicing his other passion, teaching. Gaylord spends a lot of his time teaching other sculptors and student sculptors about the fine points of his profession. He teaches students in Taiwan and in Shanghai, China.

Currently Gaylord has a new five story building under construction in Taiwan. It is planned to be his long dreamed of design center where he can bring together the many skills needed for accomplishing design jobs. He will teach sketch artists, painters and sculptors how to improve their skills. The main theme in all of his personal sculpts and in all of his teaching is emotion. How to show the emotion of a particular moment in time is his theme. He is a master at being able to translate these emotions into the body, pose and character of his sculptures. Gaylord’s typical day begins at 5 a.m. He walks one mile to his swim club, does Tai Chi for one hour, swims 500 meters, walks the mile back to his home and studio, has a small breakfast and is at his sculpting studio before 9 a.m. He particularly likes to sculpt with the morning light coming through the window at his back. It is his favorite time to create and complete the fine detail that he has become famous for producing. At lunch time he walks across the park near his home and has lunch with his Mother and Father, now 86 and 88 years old, whom he supports and cares for. When he travels, even though he may have been to see his Mother everyday for a month, he still gets complaints from her during his daily phone call; “Why don’t you ever come to see your old mother?” Gaylord says, “That is a universal Mother’s song”.

In the afternoon, Gaylord spends time meeting with his staff, teaching and handling routine business jobs. After the studio is empty and dinner is taken, Gaylord often returns to his sculpting table to work late into the night on his projects of the moment. He prefers to sculpt during those quiet times when he can put all of his attention, all of his skill and all of his soul into the moment and into the sculpture. At 5 a.m., the next new day begins.

Gaylord Ho is masterfully skillful sculptor and an inspired artist. His goal in every sculpture is to bring to life the emotion of the moment being frozen forever in clay.

Nasce no Porto em 1970.
Termina o curso de Artes Pásticas - Pintura na FBAUP em 1999 após ter estado 7 meses em Salford ao abrigo do programa Erasmus.
Em 2000 obtém o primeiro prémio na Bienal Arte Jovem de Penafiel e é seleccionado para o Concurso BP Portrait Award na National Portrait Gallery em Londres.
Em 2006 vence o Prémio Revelação de Pintura da Caixa Geral de Depósitos/ Centro Nacional de Cultura.
Tem vindo a participar em alguns concursos nacionais onde de quando em quando lhe são atribuidas menções honrosas. Deixou de concorrer.
Desde 2006 é responsável pelas aulas do Curso Livre de Desenho na Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto.
É assistente convidado no ano lectivo 2009/2010 na Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto.
É formador na escola Nextart em Lisboa.
Tem trabalho publicado na revista Egoísta, Periférica e Chroma Art Journal.

Dedica-se exclusiva e teimosamente ao Desenho e à Pintura.

Isabel Garcia nasceu na Figueira da Foz, licenciou-se em Pintura na ESBAL, vive e trabalha em Lisboa e Alcobaça.
Em 1985 foi subsidiada pela F. C. Gulbenkian para investigar a interligação de diversos materiais como o ferro, vidro e aço polido.
Tem vindo a dedicar-se à interpretação dos fenómenos atmosféricos e telúricos de um ponto de vista mágico-mitológico, a partir dos seus aspectos poéticos, recorrendo a duas linguagens de expressão.

Por um lado através da escultura onde explora o reflexo e multiplicação de imagens através da utilização do aço polido em chapa ou em tubo em associação com o espelho.
Esta tem sido uma das vertentes do seu trabalho desde os finais dos anos 80, na recriação de um universo onde o macrocosmos e o microcosmos se interpenetram.
Por outro lado através do desenho sobre superfícies translúcidas a que chamou “skins”, e que surgem em 2004, associadas a “frottage” sobre papel de arroz, que decalca repetidamente de uma matriz. O registo da sobreposição exaustiva de malhas, sobre tela ou papel, deu origem aos “continentes” numa linguagem que convoca aspectos minimalistas associados à ilusão da optical art.

A instalação e o vídeo, têm feito parte das suas intervenções em espaços institucionais, como “Mesas Postas” na cozinha do Mosteiro de Alcobaça, “Rosa Rosae” no Claustro do Museu Alberto Sampaio em Guimarães, “Love Affair” no Convento dos Capuchos, promovida pela Casa da Cerca de Almada e “Tormenta” na Ala Sul do Mosteiro de Alcobaça.

Intervenções em espaços públicos
A partir de 1992 colaborou com o Gabinete de Arquitectura Aripa na criação de grupos escultóricos para zonas exteriores de Hospitais:
- Jardim do Hospital de Ponta Delgada;
- Zona envolvente do Hospital de Santa Maria da Feira;
- Zona de acesso ao Hospital de Tomar;
- Rotunda de acesso à consulta externa do Hospital de Penafiel.

Franz Xavier Bergman  -  1861–1936

Franz Xaver Bergman (or Franz Xaver Bergmann) (1861–1936) was the owner of a Viennese foundry who produced numerous patinated and cold-painted bronze Oriental, erotic and animal figures, the latter often humanized or whimsical, humorous objects d'art. Noted for his detailed and colorful work, and signing either a 'B' in an urn-shaped cartouche or 'Nam Greb' - 'Bergman' in reverse. These marks were used to disguise his identity on erotic works.

His father Franz Bergmann was a professional chaser from Gablonz/Bohemia who came to Vienna and founded a small bronze factory in 1860. His son Franz Xaver Bergmann (1861 – 1936) inherited the company and opened a new foundry in 1900. Many of the bronzes from the 1900s were still based on designs from his fathers workshop.

He was not a sculptor himself as often described wrongfully. There were many anonymous sculptors, hired temporarily by the workshops. At the turn of the 19th/20th Century there were about fifty workshops producing Vienna Bronzes.

'Cold painted bronze' refers to pieces cast in Vienna and then decorated in several layers with so called dust paint; the know-how for the mix of this kind of paint has been lost. The color was not fired hence "cold painted". The painting was carried out mainly by women working at home, a typical cottage industry.

Sensuous poses of young women in the Art Nouveau style were disguised by a covering that revealed all when a button was pushed or a lever moved. Often carefully sculpted animals, such as bears, could be opened to reveal an erotic figure inside.

..."Maria Teresa Crawford Cabral nasceu a 2 de Setembro de 1959, em Lisboa. A incursão no desenho e na pintura começou ainda em criança, sob a influência da avó Maria Franco, sobrinha de Henrique e Francisco Franco, a quem os pais, após partirem para Angola, haviam-na deixado ao cuidado. Nesta relação com a avó, por sua vez, discípula familiar de Henrique e Francisco Franco, Maria Teresa adquiriu desde muito cedo o gosto pelas artes plásticas.

Em meados dos anos 60 foi para África, ao encontro dos pais e aí frequentou um atelier para adultos, na Câmara Municipal de Sá da Bandeira. É nesta altura, ainda enquanto adolescente, que começa a pintar a óleo, de uma forma praticamente autodidacta, esclarecendo algumas técnicas de pintura com os frequentadores do referido atelier. Em 1974/75, como tantos outros residentes das ex-colónias regressou a Portugal com a família. Depois de concluir o liceu em Lisboa, matriculou-se na escola de artes Ar.Co – Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual. Entre 1977 e 1980 frequentou os ateliers/cursos de João Hogan, Manuel Costa Cabral, António de Sena e Nuno da Câmara Pereira. Simultaneamente, formou-se em Filosofia na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, considerando que a relação entre estas duas disciplinas, a pintura e a filosofia, uma criativa e a outra reflexiva, foi complementar para o seu percurso profissional.

Após terminar a licenciatura de Filosofia, em 1985, mudou-se para a Alemanha, onde reside actualmente. O motivo da mudança foi o casamento com Matthias Mocarski, de nacionalidade alemã. Nos primeiros anos, a viver em Dortmund, fez um interregno na carreira artística por razões financeiras.

A necessidade então de trabalhar para sobreviver levou-a a executar vários tipos de trabalhos, desde leccionar aulas de Português, no Auslandsinstitut e na Berlitz Schule, à locução e jornalismo radiofónico na WDR (rádio oficial da região) durante vários anos.

Em 1994, voltou à actividade artística. Para aprofundar os conhecimentos e técnicas, matriculou-se na Escola Superior Técnica de Design, Fachhochschule Dortmund, nos estudos de Design Gráfico e Comunicação Visual. Concluiu a formação em 2002, e dessa data até 2006, continuou a frequentar as aulas de Akt-Zeichnen (desenho modelo), do professor, desenhador e escultor Peter Freese, o qual teve uma presença fundamentalno desenvolvimento da sua actividade artística. Nesta Escola foram importantes para o seu percurso os encontros com os artistas plásticos Hartmut Böhm, Willo Goenissen e H. Schrader e a frequência dos seus cursos.

Até 2001, Maria Teresa atravessou uma fase experimental abstracta, que rapidamente pôs de lado. Iniciou uma nova fase em cuja temática assentou na representação concreta da figura humana. Terminou nesta altura, Die Dreizehn Vortlönen (Os Treze Prétlönistas), a série de obras complexas que, de certo modo, revelaram a maturidade artística, através de uma abordagem temática mais conceptual.

A primeira exposição individual surgiu em Junho de 2005, na Galeria do Teatro Fletch Bizzel, proposta pelo “Dortmunder Gruppe”, em Dortmund. Dois anos mais tarde, integrou a exposição colectiva Grafik aus Dortmund, na Berswordt-Halle, com 48 artistas da Região e foi nomeada membro da Liga Deutscher Werkbund. Em 2008, iniciou a docência da cadeira de desenho de modelo na Ruhrakademie (Academia de Artes, Design e Cinema), em Schwerte.

Nesse mesmo ano, o coleccionador português, o Comendador José Berardo, adquiriu toda a sua colecção particular, resultando na organização da exposição no Centro das Artes Casa das Mudas, Calheta, Madeira, intitulada A Mãe das Mães. Pintura e Desenho de Maria Teresa Crawford Cabral, que agora se apresenta no Sintra Museu de Arte Moderna - Colecção Berardo."...

Philip Haas

Philip Haas (born 1954) is an American artist, screenwriter and filmmaker, perhaps best known for his 2012 sculpture exhibition "The Four Seasons" and his 1995 film Angels and Insects.

He began his career as a documentary film maker, directing ten profiles of unusual artists through early 1990s with the theme "Magicians of the Earth," commissioned by the Centre Georges Pompidou.

His feature films include Angels and Insects, set in Victorian England, which was nominated for an Academy Award and the Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or, Up at the Villa, an adaptation of the W. Somerset Maugham novella, starring Sean Penn, Anne Bancroft and Kristin Scott Thomas, The Situation, a political thriller set in Iraq, released in 2006, and the highly-regarded The Music of Chance (1993).

In 2008, the Sonnabend Gallery of New York featured a film installation called The Butcher's Shop, commissioned by the Kimbell Art Museum, in which Haas recreated the space depicted in Annibale Carracci’s 1582 painting of the same name.In 2010, he expanded this series to include works by Ensor and Tiepolo. His exhibition of film installations at the Kimbell Art Museum, "Butchers, Dragons, Gods and Skeletons," was listed by TIME magazine as one of the top ten museum shows of 2009
Retrospectives of his art films have been held at the Tate Gallery in London, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Lincoln Center in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship for this body of work. He has taught in the Visual Arts Program at Princeton University. In 2008 and 2010, he had one-man shows of paintings and film installations at the Sonnabend Gallery.[5] in New York City. Haas's monumental fiberglass sculpture Winter (after Arcimboldo) was unveiled in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in September, 2010, before traveling in 2011 to the Piazza del Duomo in Milan and the Garden of Versailles. In 2012, in a spectacular transformation that is typical of his work, Haas created a group of large-scale, fifteen-foot-high, fibre-glass sculptures, inspired by Giuseppe Arcimboldo's Renaissance paintings of the four seasons, comprising Spring, Summer, Autumn, and including Winter. The colossal size of Haas's sculpture accentuates the visual puzzle of natural forms—flowers, ivy, moss, fungi, vegetables, fruit, trees, bark, branches, twigs, leaves—as they are recycled to form four human portraits, each representing an individual season. The result is at once earthy, fanciful and exuberant—a commentary on Arcimboldo's style and a work of art in its own right. These sculptures were first seen in the garden of the Dulwich Picture Gallery  in the United Kingdom in the summer of 2012, before embarking on a three-year tour of American museums and botanical gardens.

Artista versátil pues trabaja con pintura, fotografía y escultura. Produce obras definidas por un intenso trabajo iconográfico, mucho más que un figurativo. Se trata de una subversión de la tradición figurativa basada en una crítica de la representación. Este proceso inevitablemente pasa por una especie de investigación de las posibilidades semánticas del ícono pictórico y de la forma en que históricamente el ícono pictórico ha sido manejado con diversas tendencias artísticas.

Su trabajo es también irónico, va contra la escala de valores sociales, e incluso contra una definición estable del arte. Uno de los recursos de su ironía es la alusión al autor, o al autor como parte del trabajo figurativo; y es esta combinación de un impulso poético y un juego con la frivolidad lo que ayuda a contextualizar su trabajo en el mundo del arte contemporáneo.

Urodzony w Zabrzu w 1964 roku. Studia na Zamiejscowym Wydziale Grafiki w Katowicach Akademii Sztuk Pięknych im. Jana Matejki w Krakowie. Dyplom w roku 1988 w Pracowni Projektowania Graficznego prof. T. Jury, oraz w Pracowni Malarstwa prof. A. S. Kowalskiego. Od roku 1992 pracuje w macierzystej Uczelni, początkowo jako asystent w Pracowni Rysunku i Malarstwa I-go roku, a następnie jako prowadzący Pracownię Rysunku Pierwszego Roku oraz pracownię Rysunku dla studentów lat II - V.Od powstania Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Katowicach ( 01.09.2001 r.) prowadzi do 2008 roku pracownię Malarstwa Ściennego i Monumentalnego w Katedrze Malarstwa, Rysunku i Rzeźby.W roku 2003 uzyskał stopień doktora habilitowanego.Od 2005 r. zatrudniony na stanowisku profesora nadzwyczajnego. Od 2008 roku prowadzi pracownię Rysunku dla studentów lat II - V. Wybrany Rektorem Uczelni na kadencję 2012-2016. Jest autorem kilkunastu wystaw indywidualnych, między innymi w Zabrzu, Katowicach, Gliwicach, Lionie, Helsinkach, Londynie, Opawie. Brał udział w wielu wystawach zbiorowych w kraju i zagranicą. Jest autorem kilku cykli Drogi Krzyżowej, między innymi do Bazyliki NMP w Licheniu. Zajmuje się również projektowaniem wnętrz kościołów (m.in. Kompleksowy projekt wnętrza, ołtarzy, malarstwo w kościele Św. Pawła Apostoła w Zabrzu, Kościół Św. Urbana w Paniówkach, Kaplica Domu Księży emerytów w Katowicach).

"Both figurative and abstract forms of art have my interest.

However, I have chosen to work in a figurative way, because it enables one to place yourself into new worlds. Figuration has a larger meaning to me - I do not just speak of copying reality. Illusion is my passion. I like to paint in a suggestive kind of way.
Although I also quite enjoy non-figurative work, like for instance Antoni Tapies' his art. But such kind of work sometimes tends to stay just too decorative.

I paint landscapes that form an allegory to the origin - birth, life and death. Here-within I like to bring the value of intimacy to people's attention. The paintings' sizes are often large. Such a big, white canvas feels to me like a standing tidal wave. The picture then slowly grows. The image builds up from blurred spots, shaping forms that get sharper and sharper. In the final stage, I work out tiny details. Then I feel like a watchmaker working on large scale.

There are also paintings that have no perspective. Just an object, placed in space. Concerning the human figure I paint, it is almost comparable to classical figuration, using only natural poses. That is why you will never find for instance a ballerina in one of my paintings. I avoid so-called romantic poses. Through soberness I believe to create work that is catching and credible.

I had my First exhibitions at three different galleries. With paintings containing line based compositions, a small group of admirers formed. After this period I painted seven Dutch authors, whom I admired. These portraits were purchased by the Dutch Museum of Literature in The Hague. Several portrait commissions followed. Exhibitions were booked two years in advance. Because of time-pressure I fell into repetition and decided to cancel all exhibitions.
Despite the Financial consequenses. I dedicated my work to a new series of large paintings with the theme: “the Origin”.

These paintings were exhibited in The Museum of Figurative Art: “de Buitenplaats” in Eelde 2002. A next exhibition followed a year later at Museum “The Markiezenhof” in Bergen op Zoom. Both exhibitions also showed sculptures of Gerhard Lentink.

At the Dutch Biennale Figurative Art the public voted in favour of my work in Arnhem 2004.

A visit, to the biggest petrochemical industry in the Netherlands: the Botlek in Rotterdam, made a big impression. Especially at night, this allien landscape was confronting, with a harsh kind of beauty. What did man evolve into? We are depending on these growing fields of heavy industry, genius of man is its ruin. (unless we accept cradle to cradle philosophy).

My fascination for our planet, as a small bead spinning through space gave me an new theme.
“The starry rider”is a painting in which a boy is sitting on top of a moonfish. The boy his head is separated form his body and becomes a planet. He is surrounded by flying satellites which look a bit like toys. The moonfish is swimming in a tank of water. The surface of the water is goldleaf, reflecting the light.

Working on paper enables me to show intimate “worlds” often inspired by our travelling.
Travelling to remote places where we ( me and my husband Reinier Sijpkens and our two sons Merijn and Siebe) performing for big groups of children surprising them with Music, magic-trics, mime, dance and painting. "

Consuelo Hernández



Consuelo Hernández (Tornavacas, provincia de Cáceres, pueblo del Valle del Jerte, España, 1950) es pintora española figurativa.
En su infancia y adolescencia Consuelo Hernández alterna los estudios de bachillerato y de dibujo y pintura en la ciudad de Cáceres. Licenciada a los 22 años en Filosofía y Letras por la Universidad de Salamanca y catedrática de lengua española, ha alternado la labor docente con la dedicación al arte.
Su primera exposición individual de pintura la realiza en 1979, en Plasencia, Cáceres, en la que su obra muestra la influencia de los pintores impresionistas franceses como Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, influencia que va dejando atrás hasta la inmersión plena en el realismo pictórico, en muchas ocasiones, poético, como han afirmado diversos críticos de su obra: Mario Antolín,1 Aníbal Núñez,2 Mohamed Lahchiri,3 José María Bermejo,4 José Marín Medina.5
La temática de su obra pictórica se centra en personas, seres y objetos de su entorno cotidiano, así como en mundos que, partiendo de la realidad, son creación de la artista. Durante los seis años de su estancia en Tánger (1997-2003) sus pinturas se inspiran en la arquitectura decadente de la época internacional de la ciudad, en especial las que dedica al Teatro Cervantes: Primavera, Verano, Otoño, Invierno en el Teatro Cervantes de Tánger.6
Artista española consolidada, su obra se ha exhibido en ferias internacionales de arte, en Chicago, Hong Kong, Singapur, París, La Haya, Madrid y en festivales internacionales. La obra de Consuelo Hernández ha recorrido las salas del Instituto Cervantes de Tánger, Rabat, Casablanca, Fez y Tetuán (Marruecos). En julio de 2012 ha presentado una selección de pinturas en el Present'Art Festival internacional, Contemporary art, que se han exhibido en la Biblioteca Nacional de Shanghái Pudong y en el CEIBS (Art Investment Forum) de Shanghái (China).7 . Sus exposiciones internacionales han continuado en 2013 en la Bridge gallery de Beijing y en Shenzhen (China),organizadas ambas por Spaniart (Madrid), así como en la Gallery-M de Viena (Austria).
