Paulo Cabral

Confira algumas obras desse talentoso artista."

Artist Statement

The artist's bronze sculptures reflect his interest in both the realistic representation of human beings, and in the presention of human emotions. The sculptures embody the postures of beggars, the playful fun of jesters, and the human drama of aging and mortality. In the implied narratives are the pathos, humor, and absurdity that are all part of life.

The artist works in open-ended series that focus on specific aspects of human behavior. In the work, the unraveling of the psyche is seen as literally breaching the heads of figures and hands and faces gesture defianly toward the viewer. Some works incorporate a satiric response to today's political climate.

These sculptures meant to speak directly to the viewer, evoking experiences that are familiar to all of us. The work is meant to be accessible, striking a balance between sculptural form and the essence of the human condition. In addition to aesthetic pleasure, the intent is to move and impact the imagination and feelings of the viewer.

The artist makes his own molds and refines the resulting wax impressions. He works directly with the foundry during the bronze casting and personally develops the patinas that complete the work.

Artist Biography

Born in Russia, Alex Wagman was attracted to art as a child, drawing and sculpting images from American popular culture. With his family, he emigrated to Israel in 1957. Wagman studied electronics in a technical institute, and worked in that field for five years. Following three years in the army, including the Six Day War, in 1972 he emigrated to the United States.

From the mid-1970s, Wagman developed and built residential apartment buildings in New York City. During his years as the head of his own firm, he participated in all phases of the design process. Since 1990, Wagman has lived with his wife and two sons in Old Westbury, NY, where his studio is located. He and his wife traveled abroad extensively, where the pursuit of art has continued to be an importantfacet of his self-education as an artist. In the mid-1990s, Wagman realized that his true passion was sculpture, and he began to construct large figures, using metal armatures and concrete. Creating art became his full-time pursuit, as he taught himself a variety of techniques, including stone carving, modeling in plasticine, mold making, and developing patinas. He absorbed the intricacies of bronze casting, learning from the artisans at foundries on Long Island.

Early on, Wagman started working in series that he considers ongoing, beginning with the sculptures of "Human Ordeal", beggars in poses of supplication, and "Performers", images of jugglers, buskers, and jesters. Devoted to an expressive realism, the artist has noted that, "The challenge is to strive creatively to strike a balance between sculptural form and the essence of the human condition." To this end, Wagman's work examines the sublime, the absurd, and the ridiculous in his survey of humankind's behavior. There are the devoted lovers of his "Romance" series (including a large-scale portrait of his wife) and the anguished busts of the "Mindset" series. In the latter, inner states of feeling are expressed in surreal eruptions that emerge from the heads of the male figures. Even these extreme states are depicted with Wagman's characteristic interest in close observation. In recent sculptures in the "Speaking With Hands" series, the artist focuses on the subjectís face and his hand in gestures of defiance or contempt, such as thumbing the nose.

Wagman's interest in the depiction of the human form and social behavior connects him with artistís such as Rodin and Daumier. He has an affinity for 20th century German satirists such as George Grosz, and the contemporary American artist Charles Bragg.

Wagman's own satirical bent is clearly expressed in his "Mockery" series, which turns its attention to the public sphere. There are biting, incensed portrayals, such as the vision of the great "Liberator" as a strutting chicken, complete with military jacket and cigar. In a new piece, "Uncle Sam" is being pulled and nearly tipped over by diminutive figures who represent the political extremists that Wagman sees as trying to hijack the Republic.

Pierre Diamantopoulo

"Pierre Diamantopoulo began his working life in 1974 as a corporate advertising copywriter, creating television and cinema campaigns for British Airways, Cadbury’s (a finger of fudge!), ICI, NatWest, Hewlett-Packard and many other blue-chip companies. His creativity won him international cinema and television advertising awards in New York, Cannes, Venice and London.
In 1989, Pierre turned to fine art full-time, opening his first sculpture studio in East Sussex and was elected an associate member of The Royal British Society of Sculptors in 2000. He has undertaken a number of major sculpture commissions, probably the most notable being his 70ft long ‘Kandi Sky’ outside Middlesbrough College.

he originality and creativity which he brought to his first career shines through in his art. He has a great affinity for classical antiquity and uses this in a contemporary style in his work, creating both nobility and humour, stillness and dynamic movement in paintings and sculpture.
We have always rated his work very highly and that is why we have brought it to London as a solo exhibition. We hope that those viewing his work here will agree with us. The show will continue in our Stockbridge gallery until the end of October.
Anyway, enough from me. Let the artist and the work speak for themselves. I leave you with Diamantopoulo’s artist statement which, I think, puts it all into perspective."

Kylo Yu Chua

Kylo Chua masterfully creates renditions of contemporary hybridity through many of his acclaimed sculptures. A modern artist at heart, Chua has grown his love for sculpture into a movement of the mind, encapsulating beauty and passion into his own abstract pieces. While rediscovering the timeless technique of hand-cast marbling, he furnishes his picturesque style of lacing contours into a blend of intricate compositioning that stirs the minds of patrons and onlookers alike.

-The Artasia Gallery Press

The appeal of the form for Kylo lies in paradox, in the notion that hard, static material can accentuate fluidity. The lesser need for approximation, he believes, allows for a more creative sense of individualism. Or, as he told scholar and professor Oscar Campomanes in an interview for the Philippine Daily Inquirer, “I believe that man is most beautiful when he is lost. It is only when life takes us into its own imagination that we eventually know more about ourselves. So in truth, the vague obscurity of abstractions like mine are relevant in showing how man awakens to know his own name in his journey of uncertainty.”

-Professor Martin Villanueva,
The Ateneo de Manila University Press 2009

He dreams the world into a pose or attitude, motionless for all eternity to behold. Tonight, the Dalisayan hands out its first ever awards for sculpture, and the honor and all of the shining memories belong to Eusebio Ehron Kylo Chua.

Ms. Yael Buencamino,
Loyola Schools Awards for the Arts 2010

A sensual style is born, weaving a labryinth of seemless curves to reenact the boldest of human conditions. See how one interprets what it means to be moved by a change of emotion. Feel the surface of a calming curiosity that has been drawn from the mind, out into open reality.

Serendipity Exhibition 2007

"If you seek to discover the attraction of true abstract sculpture, every thought must be rendered through a visual dialect so often softspoken, but never mute: the language of imagination. As in the case of mental interpretation, this faculty of thinking presides over the subjective domain and can cease the biases of logic, reason and judgement."

Visão do Artista

English

Ancient meets post-modern in Ammer Jácome's paintings. The Brazilian artist paints stunning portraits that transcend heritage. Jácome spans the wide spectrum of the beauty of humanity. Native Americans and Carnival performers, warriors and children, take center stage in the artist's dramatic portrayals of life. While the subject matter is timeless, Jácome's style is of the moment. Most notable is his tendency to fragment imagery.

Michael Fitzpatrick

Artist's Statement
In my paintings I work to express beauty through the orchestration of two-dimensional elements – shape, value and temperature. I infuse randomness whenever possible and at every scale. Random is beauty: There are no ugly clouds.
Michael Fitzpatrick started his art career in the mid sixties by attending Art Center College of Design in L.A. After graduating he went to work for D’Arcy, McManus, Masius Advertising in New York as an art director. Next he moved back to the coast where he started and ran his own ad agency: Fitzpatrick and Walker adv. Drawing and design were always a large part of Michael’s daily activity. In New York it was drawing storyboards for TV ads by the hundreds. In California design and illustration were the emphasis.
All this commercial activity was only a backdrop for Michael’s real love – painting. In the early nineties he broke away from the nine to five and did his fine art in earnest. Painting virtually every day since. He has many collectors around the world, and shows in galleries in Napa Valley and Sausalito. He held the prestigious position as resident painter at Domain Chandon for two years.
Michael paints in oil in a traditional style allowing him to fully utilize his classical training. While mostly he paints figurative, still – life and landscape are also very much represented in his body of work.

Joe Mac Kechnie

“Over the past few years my advancement in fine art has been greatly influenced by developing my skills in drawing and painting. For me, art has become a new language through which I can express my creativity and feelings. My greatest goal is to continue to expand my understanding of artistic techniques so they become the natural tools for laying down on canvas my ideas and emotions.

The world provides me with an infinite canvas. Everything I see becomes subjects for my art through the mediums of graphite, ink, pastel and paint. My purpose is to isolate, depict and capture the essence of a subject. I seek qualities that are elusive, difficult to discover and portray. Painting for me is about sharing my view as I witness and savor the visual moment.”

Joe was born in Petersburg Alaska and was raised in the Pacific Northwest. As an engineering graduate of the University of Washington, Joe has worked as a computer network design engineer in the Seattle area for many years. Following retirement, Joe has pursued a career in fine art. He continues to develop his skills, techniques and style in all mediums and has appeared in several national art magazines and has received many local and national awards for his work.
Joe is a signature member of the Northwest Watercolor Society and the Puget Sound Group of NW Painters. He is a member of the American Impressionist Society, the Oil Painters of America, the Northwest Pastel Society and is the past president of the Eastside Association of Fine Arts and past president of the Puget Sound Group of NW Painters. Joe teaches art workshops locally and in Europe. Joe has artworks in several local galleries and has had artworks in the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio and the National Arts Club, Grand Gallery in New York, NY.

Angela is currently represented by Hanson Scott Gallery in Seattle and Cole Gallery in Edmonds, WA.

artist statement
Paintings are much more than simply a likeness, they are an opportunity to capture a moment. I am drawn to painting the portrait, as I enjoy the passive and active roles I can have in people's lives while painting them. I tend to treat all my studio work like a portrait, cropping in close. Whatever the subject matter, my first step is to achieve a good drawing. Value, light, and colour are strong elements in all my work, with composition an important factor as well. I try to paint the world as I see it, or as I would like to see it.

I have been painting in pastel and oil for more than 25 years.

My inspiration comes from the light and forms in nature, and the sense of calm those things create. I work primarily with leaves and petals because they capture those sensations in a small but complete way, and because I enjoy their malleability. Their changeable forms allow me to use them as abstraction—as a sort of medium within a medium—to suggest skies, clouds, weather and flight. Other series include miniature landscapes and images of koi. Each piece becomes an environment for momentary escape.

Another inspiration for me is fine craft. I feel that craft is an essential component of art. It is important for me to take the time both to plan a painting and to make sure that painting is complete in every sense—composition, balance, color palette, finish level, quality of strokes… it should appear neither unfinished nor overworked. Quality of materials is also essential. I use only the purest pigments and archival materials in both creation and framing of my artwork.

My paintings are all original, one-of-a-kind works—never reproductions of any kind.

Van Renselar

Modern art prints and original digital artworks on canvas by contemporary abstract artist Van Renselar.

ILLUSTRATIONS FROM LOST STORIES - THE ART OF VAN RENSELAR

Van Renselar grew up in South Wales, moving to Little Venice in his teens then on to Bromley, where he now lives and works.
As a contemporary abstract artist Van Renselar is more concerned with form and colour as an alternative to subject matter. It is not his aim to represent our surroundings or any particular object, he takes ideas from experiences which are visual, cerebral and emotional in nature. His inspiration can as easily be sparked by lines from a song as by an emotional event.

Colour is equally as important as the general design and Van Renselar will spend a lot of time perfecting the tone of a particular colour, his primary objectives being to establish harmony both in terms of composition and the use of colour. Across the range of pictures there is no defining key of symbols - there is no ‘language’ for the viewer to learn, each picture establishes itself on its own visual merits and the viewer’s interest.

As Van Renselar says, "I want to make pictures which involve and intrigue the viewer. I take ideas from around and within me, using intuition and imagination to create a new context. Much of my work stems from my subconscious, where I see actions, events and ideas as particular shapes and colours. It took me a long time to fully realise that not everyone translated the world in this way.”

Van Renselar describes himself as an abstract artist, yet his paintings sometimes utilise figurative elements - he explains: "These are spontaneous symbols, they are just things that occur to me when making the particular picture, hence their meaning can differ from picture to picture. They seldom have any meaning related to what they actually resemble. I don’t want my pictures to be understood - to me, deconstructing a picture would be like dividing a poem into its single words.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF VAN RENSELAR'S WORK
Van Renselar's work is created from disparate sources such as drawing (either on paper or directly onto screen), self-generated digital photography, painting and scanning. These separate elements are all collaged together on a computer into a digital file which is then output as a giclee and sealed. This methodology makes it possible for the final picture to be different sizes. This form of working is sometimes mistakenly called CGA (computer generated art) - a description Van Renselar rejects. The computer generates nothing at all, it is merely a ‘receptacle’ for collecting the different elements together - collage is a more accurate description.

Jaw Cooper

"J.A.W. Cooper was born in England and grew up in Africa, Sweden, Ireland, various other locations throughout Europe, and California. Cooper's love of drawing and curiosity toward the natural world evolved naturally as she traveled around the globe. Inspired by forms found in nature, curio cabinets, fashion photography, the grotesque, alien, and flawed, Cooper makes a living as a freelance illustrator, gallery, and sketch artist and currently lives and works in downtown Los Angeles, California."
