Wolfgang Hutter

"Wolfgang Hutter (born December 13, 1928, Vienna, Austria) is a painter, draughtsman, printmaker and stage designer. Hutter's imagery is characterised by an artificial paradise of gardens and fantastical fairytale-like scenes.
The son of A. P. von Gütersloh, Hutter studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Professor Robin C. Andersen and then under his father. Together with Ernst Fuchs, Rudolf Hausner, Anton Lehmden and Arik Brauer, he is one of the main representatives and founding members of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. Hutter was awarded the UNESCO Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1954. In 1966, he was appointed a professorship at the University of Applied Arts Vienna."

Norbert Gladis

"Born in Wittenberg (town of Martin Luther) on the first of November 1956. Already at his schooltime he discovered painting as an important of communication with life. He finished his professional training as decorateur also writer and graficpainter. His final examination he passed in evening classes. During his learning years he looked for ways to find his indentity. His wish for identity hasn't always been agree with the interest of society, which led to difficulties in the socialistic state. 1986 he got his diploma in writing and graphic workmanship and also started to create wood and jewellery design. Most of the paintings have to be seen since 1986 in the region of Thuringia, Germany. His works show the truth/reality of time vision- nightmares and life experience in a surrealistic way. These are pictures which do not always fit into a normal frame- you can't comprehend them completely. In every mood you discover something new. The viewer can judge for himself."

Tam Austria

A highly skilled figurative artist who excels in the dynamics of realism, Tam (for Anastacio) Austria is a collectors’ favorite. His followers do not seem to find the long wait for an Austria work. This is, concededly, the best proof that the 46-year-old Austria, son of peasants parents from Tanay, Rizal, had indeed gone a long way from his humble origins.

Austria’s artistic odyssey began in the 1950s. The boy Austria turned out a highly realistic oil painting of Christ with a crown of thorns – an impressive first work for one who was not even 10 years old. The parish priest, who must have noticed the early signs of artistic talent in Austira who served him as altar boy, gave the youth his fist exposure to art. The generous priest was also instrumental in winning a four-year high scholar scholarship for the evolving artist. In 1960, Austria enrolled at the University of Sto. Tomas for a degree in fine arts. He was a standout and easily won a number of prizes for his early efforts.

Carlos “Botong” Francisco, the national artist for painting, whom Austria admired deeply, encouraged the artist to join the Ayala Museum as artist and illustrator. His first project was to design the museum’s diorama of Philippine history. His considerable gifts caught the attention of the Zobel de Ayala family, prominent art patron, who offered him a commission to do a mural, along with Fernando Amorsolo and Fernando de Ayala, for the St. Anthony Chapel in Forbes Park.

Sometime in 1970, Austria mounted his first exhibition at Marcel’s Gallery of Fine Arts in Oakland, California. In the same year, he represented the Filipino community in the International Art Festival in Berkeley, California. This was soon followed by exhibitions in San Francisco, California, as well as the Hidalgo Gallery in Makati (1972), the Galerie Beue (1973), Hyatt Regency (1975) and Sining Kamalig (1976). A high point in his career was his nomination as one of the five finalists in the 1983 Mobil Art Awards.

Austria’s work reveal the artist’s preoccupation with the myths and legends of his people, the mother and child, the peasant folk, their customs and traditions, the colorful panorama of rural landscape. They figure prominently in his works because of their timeless and universal appeal, he explains. “I think my work reflects a number of basic truths, perhaps, too, nostalgia for the good things slipping away. Then there are the earth, the fields, the sky, the quiet corner people long for. Perhaps people are drawn to my painting by common feelings that go beyond art.”

Austria has succeeded in fusing disparate elements of painting into fully orchestrated compositions that have captured critical interest in his works. As the art critic and author Manuel Duldulao explained: “Every painting (of Austria) works to achieve a fusion of form and content that transcends the narrative or symbolic implication.”

In due recognition of Austria’s creative ability and the distinctively Filipino spirit that his works project, the Development Bank of the Philippines honored him with its corporate award, citing two murals, Balikatan and Pagdiriwang, in particular, as “the epitome of his artistry”.

The award’s citation reads: “In his hands, craft and vision are fused. He transcended the narrow medium, investing his murals and easels with the robust spirit and infectious gaiety of simple folks whose joys and sorrows he captured on canvas with enviable fidelity.”

The recognition is well-deserved.

Tsherin Sherpa ( Ang Tsherin Sherpa )

Tibetan Contemporary Artist

"The group of works which form Golden Child/Black Clouds continues my exploration of our perception of the sacred and mundane in everyday life. Originally, the focus of a previous series, Tibetan Spirit, showed figures that were half human/half deity enjoying the playful discovery of all the beauty and trappings of the modern world. While such hybrid Tibetan Spirits are still witnessing all that is unfolding, in these new works a human child is now placed in the foreground as if he or she should be contemplated like a deity. It is an attempt to look at world events through the eyes of these metaphorical images of Tibetan children.

The inspiration for this series came about during my recent trip to Dharamsala when I began to wonder about the Tibetan children who had come there from various parts of Tibet. Shortly after my travels, I saw the documentary “Olo, The Boy from Tibet” about a child's daily life within the Tibetan Children's Village in Dharamsala. In the film, Olo's uncle explains to his nephew that he must study very hard because he's the first generation to have such an opportunity. The rest of his family either ended up in jail or dead. Not only do these children find themselves adapting to a new culture and environment, there is a lot of responsibility placed upon them as if they were the only hope for the future.

For myself, I became aware of new opportunities and responsibilities after becoming an American citizen. In the past, travelling abroad would cause me anxiety due to the uncertainty that my visa might not be approved because of my Nepalese citizenship, now, as an American, I can just hop on the next plane to visit my gallery in London without having any worries. This mental change has opened my eyes to the mobility and trappings of borders in a globally aware society and how that affects our sense of identity and self-worth. This insight translates not only a desire to express what is going on in my community in the United States but also in communities around the world.

Working in my studio, I generally have National Public Radio playing in the background, which stems from my years as a thangka apprentice in my father's studio when monks would often come over from nearby monasteries to discuss and debate, and the background chatter would infiltrate my consciousness on some level. Nowadays, hearing snippets of the world's events, they also become incorporated into my paintings in the form of silhouettes. These events may inspire and frighten us though we may never encounter them in person. On some level they may be abstract but they still become part of our story by how they affect our perception.

Today's children are witnessing the same things as adults: global warming, terrorism, poverty, overcrowding, and suicide. As technology becomes ubiquitous, we can experience the events of the world as if at first-hand through vivid onsite iPhone recordings uploaded to YouTube within minutes of their occurring. What will this instant information do to a child's forming psyche when they should be playing outdoors, carefree? These sights could also become the cause for future artists, activists, mothers and politicians to make a change in the world. Yet I fear that the world's chaos could lead also to a cycle of depression and desperate acts. The black clouds loom but the child glows.

In addition to the gold leaf that I've been using in previous series, I've begun experimenting with cheap materials such as glitter and alcohol based inks. These items are traditionally used in crafts done by children. By placing expensive and cheap materials next to each other I am attempting to blur the boundary between what is precious and what is mundane. I hope we question why we see certain objects as valuable whilst others are deemed worthless and disposable."

Ger Doornink

GerDoornink (1949) received an education at the Arnhem Art Academy in Publicity. Doornink is a very versatile artist who started his career as designer and photographer in the advertisement business and the fashion world. Here he build quite the reputation, using an alias: Gerry the Cat.
He lived and worked in Tokyo, where he became acquainted with the Japanese style, and used this in his designs. In Milan he became seriously impressed of the Italian masters and the Italian way of life. When he returned to Amsterdam,Doornink studied the Dutch old masters like Rembrandt.
Nowadays he paints large portraits of women. He combines different aspects of his career in his paintings like the graphic design, influences from the old masters and his eye for beauty. He feels throughout his career he has always been looking for the aspect of beauty in the world surrounding him. Now he wants to present an element of beauty into art loversandcollectioners’ homes.

" I observe human forms and relationships with fascination, awareness, empathy, and frustration. The human figure allows me to use my painterly hand and see more abstract forms - making it possible to paint with other issues in mind. A bunch of triangles becomes an arm; wallpaper becomes scribbles; a knee a line. Objectivity creates intimacy and distance simultaneously. Seeing subtle formal phenomena and having a very accurate imagination play a large part in my painting how a person is. My hope is that even a stranger can become intensely known to the viewer."
