John Waters

John Waters established his career as a professional artist after working as an architect, and his passion for beautiful design, perspective and construction remains evident in this new body of work.
Within this foundation Waters combines and layers a number of visual and conceptual elements such as still life, landscape, and the notion of worlds within worlds.
Carefully planned and executed, these paintings reflect the artist’s interest in perfection, but also explore his fascination for the dream-like nature of reality. Waters has framed and juxtaposed mementoes such as teacups, ladders, tables, chairs and drapery with landscapes and interiors that provide alternate points of view. These paintings evoke a sense of both weightlessness and physicality – as if one could enter into the very picture plane itself before dissolving like a fleeting reverie before your eyes.
This subversion of fictional reality that unifies and separates at the same time, is what Waters refers to as his ‘magic realism’. ‘Four Walls’ describes the artist’s interest in the concept of the ‘fourth wall’ in artistic works “understanding the conventions of the artistic field and consciously choosing to address, blur or break them”. He explains further; “I attempt to create a visual equivalent of the feelings of wonder, curiosity and poetic intensity experienced in honored moments of awareness”.

Steve Harris

Steve Harris was born in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1953 and is self-taught as an artist. He moved with his family to Australia in 1991. Harris has become well known for his impeccably painted still life compositions, the skillful use of light, shadow and space being a hallmark of his approach. He tends to depict objects which have an everyday function or perhaps have even been discarded, but the work is about much more than simple representation.

'Harris is a master of understated realism which in turn evokes its own sense of ‘atmosphere’ and contemplative mood. His works have been described as ‘meditations in light’, and this is very much the feeling one has when attending one of Harris’s exhibitions – a type of reflective silence emanates from the paintings and imbues them with a spiritual quality that one would not perhaps anticipate.'

Stephen Trebilcock

ABOUT

The attributes of these engaging images are the rich palette, robust forms and textured paintwork that animate his vision. As a vegetarian and passionate horticulturalist this is Stephen Trebilcock’s milieu; painting and life are closely intertwined. In a wider context, his paintings reflect a set of values and a way of life many desire today, a life perhaps of a bygone era which was more approachable and honest.

Trebilcock’s work does not focus on the vast panoramic scenery of the Australian landscape so often depicted by our painters: his world is more immediate and intimate. From childhood surrounded by orchards, it is the introduced European fruits, vegetables and flowers that capture Trebilcock’s attention. His images possess a Biblical abundance, whilst noting also the imperfections or blemishes that reflect the reality of every day life.

Stephen Trebilcock was born in Montacute in the Adelaide Hills, and spent most of his childhood in the small community of Winkie on the River Murray. His works are strongly influenced by his early years living on a fruit block and his love of gardening.

Trebilcock is a self-taught painter. Before committing to a full-time career as an artist, he worked as a kitchen hand, fencing contractor and signwriter. The approach to painting that Stephen has taken is strongly based on his drawing skills, developed over years of careful observation and study.

Stephen’s first solo exhibition was held at Hill-Smith Fine Art in 1990, by whom he has been represented since. In 1993 he was awarded a travelling scholarship to Europe, where he completed a course of study at the Slade School of Art in London. Time spent in Venice also had a great impact on him, and the result of this travel is the classical and timeless appeal that. Stephen’s work possess.

Stephen continues to paint in his Adelaide Hills studio, working towards exhibitions as well as undertaking selected commissions. Since 1990 he has held numerous solo exhibitions around Australia and overseas.

Artist Statement
The Australian suburban environment is for me a place where an enchanted subject can be found. In the overlooked and undefined spaces without purpose or function, a wilderness grows with an urgent will to live. My paintings reflect upon how ideology present in the tradition of romantic landscape painting transfers into lived experience of the everyday domestic environment.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My brothers have been a major focus of my artistic practice. Previously they appeared as sculptures or painted figures, tender portraits of human relationships.

This work marks a shift from the figure to the “moving life”, a portrait of a room that evolves as the space gets lived in, moved around, and occupied. The haphazard placement of objects and clothing strewn about the room provides a busy still life to capture in marks and measurements.

As the light changes through the day, and the week gives into the weekend, this panoramic view of connected floor boards, offcuts from the newly laid floor of the room, click and slide into view.

Lisa King is a self taught artist based in Adelaide, South Australia. Her work crosses over various mediums - oil, acrylic and charcoal. Lisa’s passion is portraiture and characters. Her works range from canvas to large-scale mural work, with a gravitation to romance, dark personality, indie culture, pop influence and escapism. Her work has been labeled ‘colorfully angelic yet seemingly dark.’

After 3 years of creating, managing, and curating Paperhorse Studios ARI in Adelaide, South Australia (2007-2010), Lisa changed direction from multi-disciplined designer to focus on her painting career professionally. Fast forward to 2013 and Lisa King is getting recognition throughout the Australian capitals. She is currently working on various projects including live art performance, workshop participation and urban scape mural work and exhibitions; which include over 25 solo and group shows in the past 3 years. She maintains a unique approach to her exhibitions with large scale walls, installation and strongly themed environments in which her fanciful society exists. Lisa hopes to spend part of 2013 - 14 traveling throughout South East Asia and India on a working holiday where she will primarily be focusing her energy on large scale street art and various volunteer community projects.

Mark Ogge

Mark Ogge

A painter whose subject matter is ostensibly the world of the carnival and cheap, tawdry restaurants.

But these paintings are pervaded by a mysterious psychological drama just beyond the conscious threshold, evoking not an escapist retreat into childhood but the haunting and melancholic frisson of the collision of childhood innocence and wonder with an ever dwindling, constricting adult world, where ghosted, squandered selves linger; the erosion of the self in a sea of false promises.

However their formal mastery and subtle echoing of their artistic antecedents bespeaks a compassion and restraint well beyond one-dimensional political posturing. Then again, like all serious paintings, anything said about them is probably a load of baloney.

Best to take a look at the work in question and like the judge said to the jury, “strike the aforesaid from the record”. Selwyn Rodda

Mark Ogge’s dreamlike paintings evoke childhood memories both dark and magical. Ogge, who also painted the façade for the Melbourne Festival’s famous Spiegeltent in 2001 and 2002, has long been fascinated with the iconography and imagery of the circus and fairground.

Ogge undertook a major comission for Melbourne’s Luna Park in 2008, creating a 60 meter mural titled One Thousand and One Nights, featured in the parks scenic railway. His recent work continues his facination with fun parks and circus life for which he is best known, while also delving into new subject matter exploring such biblical legends as St George and the Dragon and The Temptation of St Anthony.

A brooding disquiet is carefully embedded into all of Ogge’s work. Exploring the dichotomy between enchantment and disillusionment the artist invites us to step into his strange and sometimes frenzied environments. His dreamlike hyper reality is reinforced by the use of saturated colour and loose, visceral brush strokes.

Mark says of his work:
“ A central theme of the work is the dichotomy between enchantment and disillusionment. The transition between the childhood experience of the fairground as a wonderland of lights, colours, movements, and adventure, to the adult realisation of a more ambivalent reality, the cheap stuffed toys, tired old rides and stalls, junk food, and hard bitten showies. These works aim to convey something of both these ways of seeing.”

“The circus tents andthier landscapes are inviting, with all their associations of mystery and excitement from childhood, bu the absence of people and the sombre atmosphere suggests a loneliness. The tents allude to the self and the landscapes that contain them are the interior mood or feeling.”

Stacey Durand
Artist's Statement
Over the years I have lived in and around many coastal communities and mill towns in New England. I have been drawn to the seacoast and the regional character of its cities and buildings. These neighborhoods are often filled with old homes and buildings that are packed together tightly, creating interesting, crowded arrangements and compositions. The overlapping homes, quirky seacoast neighborhoods, old mill buildings, and urban landscapes have been the subjects of my work as I am drawn to the layers and connections that these buildings and objects create. I work from photographs of actual places from my environment. I then take these buildings and neighborhoods out of their original context and combine them with other images to create new connections among these landscapes. In doing this I create an environment that feels strangely familiar and new at the same time.

Julie Davidson

Julie Davidson's highly representational and formally rigorous paintings position themselves within a broadly pluralistic, contemporary interest in both the literal and existential. Behind the modest restraint of each of her subjects – cloth, vessel, fruit and plant – an interrogation is being set up between perceptions of the domestic and ritual, the banal and cherished. Each object sits in a state of simple repose, open to the scrutiny of the gaze. Beyond their assumed solidity and uniqueness – their truthfulness – they also serve to pay witness to a more transient, shifting state of mind.

Amidst the stillness of foliage and fabric, it is the dappled effect of bright sunlight that interrupts an otherwise static scene. Here light becomes a pervasive agent, used to activate something very much alive, penetrative and questioning. Its slow, haptic fall across the surface of each object gives a heightened sense of clarity to their otherwise imperceptible details. The eye lingers on the dying tips of leaves, the faint outline of an obscured table leg, the mottled shadow of an unseen tree canopy – each suggestive of the steadfast and earthbound reality of time beyond this resonate, halted moment.

Through the act of painting, the merest of things can be elevated to a state of veneration. Rather than being imbued with any emblematic or luxurious value, these objects are transformed into tools of meditation. They function as a means to sharpens the senses, forcing the viewer to take the time to observe with clarity.

In essence Davidson's work is searching for that elusive, fleeting experience of harmony and tranquillity. Her still life paintings aim to capture that unexpected instant in which time opens out and softens, bringing with it a spirit of balance between world and the self.

Tanmaya Bingham

statement:
I used to think I could demystify, unravel and reveal our dynamics and patterns as humans. The further I go down the creative path the more I realize this is a pointless quest because it is void of mystery. Although we often fear the unknown and unpredictable we overtly or covertly desire its magic.

My artwork's role, whether drawing, painting, sculpture or installation, is to confound and give a different and often macabre perspective on a world that is rapidly becoming homogenized. My motive is to highlight and exaggerate imperfections and unique qualities that individualize us rather then conforming to societal glorification of perfection and beauty.

This creates a platform for the viewer to be in a didactic exchange with himself or herself in order to reevaluate their perceptions.

Tanmaya’s artworks investigate the mechanics of human dynamics and the neurological processes that create patterns in our daily lives of which we are often not aware.

Tanmaya’s focus is on psychological, sociological and genealogical patterns that occur within the context of herself and her immediate circles. Although the content of her work is highly personal, the themes are universal. Each artwork or series of artworks explore these themes and how they can be altered in the given context to create new patterns and thus new results.

Tanmaya chooses herself and her family and friends as her primary subjects because she believes that we learn through example and the stories of others. Therefore, each artwork, whether painting, sculpture, drawing or installation, is laden with symbolism.

When these concepts are delivered in visual form they become a metaphoric map that is meaningful for both the subject and the viewer.

This is a journey through the everyday in the hope of finding the little magic that I used to carry with me on the train, in my backpack and in the reserved special spot on my desk. But, the more I work; the Company car, the Company responsibility, the Company phone and the time spent on, in, and immersed in the Company, the less I seem to be able to find the bear that I packed out of the way. This is about the tiny little bit of moss that sits in the crack of the concrete footpath outside the office that reminds me that one day, I should stop working and go find bear.

Paul Trefry

‘Sculptures by the Sea’ is a hugely popular annual event at Sydney’s Tamarama Beach with sculptures along spectacular cliff tops, in nearby park, and 500,000 visitors. This year’s controversy generated PR ’frisson’ and backwardness.

‘Little Boy Lost’ by Paul Trefry is a life-like but oversized fibreglass rendition of a naked small boy with a spaced look. After initial exposure, so to speak, powers-that-be decided the poor boy’s nascent willy could shock families, encourage pedophiles or whatever and girded his loins with grungy speedos. This pre-emptive strike was self-censorship at its worst, as apparently there had been no public complaints. Weasel words from the event director and local council were the only justification offered.

After a couple of days the artist finally revolted over this ridiculous intrusion, removing the offending cossie, hopefully restoring lost boy’s innocence, and threatening to withdraw the sculpture if contradicted. References to Bill Henson and utterances from child protection lobbyists were rife, but common sense prevailed and of course the sculpture has greatly amused and entertained the masses. Council and event director both ducked for cover with more weasel words, and suddenly nobody was responsible for the original decision to censor. Bravo Paul!

Folks, its actually made from fibreglass, not pulsating flesh, and represents the most natural form of naked innocence, found of course ironically on all Australian beaches. It’s amazing and scary how self-appointed moral guardians and anti-pedophilic hysteria can induce muddle-headed and reactionary thinking in people who should know better. Fortunately Fahrenheit 451 had not been applied to the event catalogue.

Hadyn Wilson

Born in 1955, Hadyn Wilson has been a practicing artist for more than thirty five years and in that time has had over thirty solo exhibitions both here and overseas as well as participating in numerous group shows.
He attended The Julian Ashton Art School and East Sydney Tech in the 70s and then did a post graduate degree at the A.N.U. and a Masters degree at the U.N.S.W. and has recently completed a PhD at the University of Newcastle. He has travelled abroad on various scholarships, including the S.M.H travelling art scholarship and a Dyson bequest grant from the A.G.N.S.W. travelling and exhibiting in Europe. In the 1980s and later went to Europe again on an Amnesty International Art prize. He has won various awards including the Mosman Art prize, The South Sydney Sculpture Symposium, Art in the Rocks, the Gallipoli Art Prize and Artist in Residency postings. He has exhibited in the Sulman, Wynne and Archibald prizes, the Hazelhurst and Adelaide Perry drawing prizes and numerous invitational exhibitions including the Waterford’s Natural history prize at the Museum of South Australia and the Redlands Westpac exhibitions. In 2007 he had a major survey show at the Manly Regional Gallery. He has had various commissions including a large sculpture for Mosman Council for the Centenary of Federation in Spit Park, Sydney.
One of his abiding interests has been artwork based on botanical specimens and specifically extinct plants, which was the basis of a major exhibition in 2010. Over the past ten or so years Hadyn has produced three separate exhibitions based on this project. His interest in this area has spilled over into writing and the many narrative extracts that accompany some of the images are taken from an ever increasing body of associated texts which he hopes can eventually be compiled into a substantive work in itself.
He has lived in the Hunter Valley, (near Wollombi) for fifteen years with his partner Penny and daughter Correa where he maintains an abiding love of nature and a lifetime’s ongoing commitment to environmental projects and concerns. He was recently short-listed for the Newton John medal for contributions to culture and the arts by the University of Newcastle.
