Miljenko Bengez

MILJENKO BENGEZ was born in Zagreb (Croatia) in 1954. In the eighties he became engaged in art painting. From 1984 to 1989 he studied oil painting skills in Professor Vilim Svecnjak's atelier. His first one-man exhibition was in 1987, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in the Club of Cultural and Scientific Workers. In 1990 he stayed in Florence in "Campo del Restauro - Lorenzo de Medici" and studied oil paintings' restoration in Professor Leonardo Passeri's studio. Terminated his education he leaves for New York where he starts exhibiting his work in "S.E.Feinman Fine Arts" Gallery. Ali Hassoun

Ali Hassoun was born in Saida (Lebanon) in 1964. In 1982 he moved to Italy to continue his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. In 1992 he graduated from the city’s university with a degree in Architecture. He now lives and works in Milan. He has added Italian nationality to his Lebanese nationality, and has thus been able to fill in areas that were lacking in his own individual experience.

The most easily identifiable theme of his painting is travel, contributing different experiences and visions. Ali Hassoun’s works seem to act as a pole of attraction for various cultures, which merge to create a new, richer culture. In opposition to the clash of civilzations, Hassoun wants to highlight the idea of “humanity”; a universal and spiritual feature that is common to all folks, and that always come first, before any political or religious division.

The artist becomes a sort of cultural translator, and different traditions can coexist in the perfectly balanced space of his colourful paintings. Islamic and African characters are all caught in a game of smart quotations and indirect exchanges between the main action and the background.

Elias Shaker, Faysal Sultan, Omar Calebrese, Mauro Civai, Gianni Giacopelli, Fabrizio Mezzedimi, Letizia Franchina, Luigi Zangheri, Jean Noel Schifano’, Alberto Fiz, Silvia Guastalla, Luca Beatrice, Alessandro Riva, Luca Pietro Vasta, Aldo Mondino, Chiara Guidi, Maurizio Sciaccaluga, Manuela Brevi, Ivan Quaroni, Gabriele Mandel Khan, Marina Moiana, Gianluca Marziani, Beatrice Buscaroli, Antonio d’Avossa, Murteza Fedan, Melih Gorgun, Chiara Canali, Mimmo di Marzio, Saleh Barakat and Martina Corgnati have written about him.

Álvaro Reja

My name is Alvaro Reja. I was born in Badajoz on June 20, 1964, and I've lived in Palencia since 1971.

I'm a self-taught painter, and I'm continually learning from all of those schools and artists which spark an interest in me.

Painting for me is a thrilling and intense vocation, which is why my works unfold under the beguiling appearance of contradiction: fantasy and reality, strength and gentleness.

This is why they are always caught somewhere between heart and reason, clashes and caresses. I always aim, as I create my pieces, for the last brushstroke to carry with it the miracle of harmony and in the end for my music to be heard.

I hope you enjoy my paintings as much as I enjoyed making them.

Alla Tsank was born in Moscow. She has studied art since she was 10 years old. Alla graduated from Moscow Theatrical Art College in 1983 and was invited to work in one of the best theatres of the Russian Capital – the Mayakovsky Theater. For several years she directed her creativity toward stage design, costumes and props.

Alla immigrated to the United States in 1990, where she has continued her artistic career. Her recent works are created in oil on canvas, linen and paper. Her pallet contains calm earthy colors carefully built up by fine layers of mostly transparent oils.

Although Alla was inspired by the images from Renaissance Art, her current work has a distinct contemporary aesthetic that could be described as magic realism. These works reflect her deeply lyrical and uniquely poetical vision, a synthesis of European and American culture.

'Greek Myths' published by Walker Books, written by Ann Turnbull, illustrated by Sarah Young.

'A beautifully written and illustrated collection of Greek Myths containing seventeen famous tales full of love, loss, greed, envy and bravery. ...this collection is truly something to treasure. The timeless stories of Theseus and the Minotaur, Persephone, King Midas, Ariadne, Orpheus and Eurydice, and Echo and Narcissus are told with great freshness and there is a good balance between the gentler myths and the ones packed with battles and monsters. A wonderful collection and a wonderful introduction to the fascinating world of Greek mythology, brought to life by one of our finest writers and an exciting new illustrator.'

Laila Farcas-Ionescu's sculpture
Traveling through life with a strong connection to her Transylvanian heritage is a definitive mark for artist Laila Farcas-Ionescu. She accepts this as a matter-of-fact, aware her journey is to walk the
double-edged sword of physical and metaphysical experience.

In her artistic production she was always interested in weaving yet untold stories by unfettering the characters who populate her personal universe.
The world of her sculpted figures evolved though the years, permanently drawing breath from notable events of her labyrinthine life.
The sculptures are a cumulative result of indelible events: childhood and early life spent in truly surreal Transylvania; schooling under the communist regime, surreal all the same; reluctant immigration; exotic travels; various coexisting careers; strong interest for and study of spirituality; witnessing the life/death cycles; deep admiration for a long list of artists from all periods. In the end, all these occurrences led up to the categorical resolve of allowing the beings of her inner forum to come alive.

Some of the sculptures are executed in porcelain, with silver, occasionally gold inlays (evidence of her work as a jeweler), engobes, glazes, mixed media and encaustic. Other sculptures are done in bronze with various colored patinas.

The porcelain sculptures are characterized by the contrast between intensely colored areas and faces/hands left mostly white in order to showcase the stark beauty of the material.

The sculptures bring to the viewer's mind scenes from Georges de la Tour's paintings, through both narrative and physiognomy.
Although by deliberate decision these characters cannot be placed in a definite period or geographic location, they irrefutably belong to the realm of magical realism, where numinous beings in enigmatic interaction are but the norm.

This body of work is unique because through material, size, color and subject it brings the other-worldliness of magical realism in close proximity to the viewer, making ever so small the gap between reality and dream world. The artist's quest is to create beings so close to being alive, in spite of personal interpretation of proportion and form, that the viewer might be readily startled by their power to alter perception and feign vague movements.

Through her characters and their stories Laila Farcas-Ionescu invites the viewer to mirror himself in these little creatures and have a glimpse of a parallel, palpable world and its undisclosed yet familiar rituals and undertakings.

ARTIST STATEMENT
As an artist, I was always interested in telling stories by unleashing
the characters of my personal universe.
The world of my sculpted fi gures evolved through the years, drawing
breath from every event in my labyrinthine life until fi nding
permanent form.
The sculptures I make are a cumulative result of indelible events: childhood
and early life spent in truly surreal Transylvania, my birth place;
schooling under the communist regime, surreal all the same; unwilling
immersion into a new, unfamiliar culture; exotic travels; various
simultaneous careers; study of the metaphysical; a lifetime dedicated
to drawing the human fi gure; deep admiration for a long list of artists,
contemporary and of other times. In the end, all these occurrences lead
up to a categorical resolve: let the little people in my head come alive.
Some of my sculptures are in porcelain, with silver, occasionally gold
inlays (evidence of my work as a jeweler), engobes, glazes, mixed
media and encaustic. The porcelain sculptures are characterized by the
contrast between intensely colored areas and faces/hands left mostly
white in order to showcase the stark beauty of the material. Other
sculptures are done in bronze and display several colored patinas,
meant to further enhance the atmosphere of the piece.
The sculptures bring to the viewer’s mind scenes from Georges de la
Tour’s paintings, through both narrative and physiognomy.
By deliberate decision, these characters cannot be placed in a defi nite
period or geographic location, but they irrefutably belong to the realm
of magical realism, where numinous beings in enigmatic interaction
are but the norm.
This body of work is unique because through size, material, color and
subject, it brings the other-worldliness of the sculpted object in close
proximity to the viewer, making ever so small the gap between reality
and dream world. My quest is to bring about works so close to being
alive, that in spite of personal interpretation of proportion and form,
the viewer might be readily startled by their power to alter perception
and feign vague movements.
Through my characters and the stories they tell I invite the viewer to
mirror himself in my fi gures and have a glimpse of a parallel, palpable
world and its undisclosed yet familiar rituals and undertakings.

Caterina Zacchetti

Caterina Zacchetti was born in Milan 1979 and attended the U.Bocconi Art School in Milan and she gradated from the Academy of Belle Arti in Brera, she studied sculpture and she won a scholarship at the Acadamy of Bellas Artes Miguel Hernandez in Altea, in Spain. She moved to Formentera and than to Barcelona.

Her poetic artistry is focused on feminine figures: “The figures take shape immediately I put my hands in contact with the soft and malleable clay (terra). Bodies full of life emerge step by step from the inert clay, the soft curve of a breast, an ample bottom, a fetching twist of the upper body, and suddenly. I find them in front of me, like sensual apparitions, these exalting and enchanting beautiful women. Soft but sensual curves, characterizing the feminine figure. Slender waists, making the women appear fragile. Almost total absence of the heads because the women are dreamers. But strong and sinuous legs because even if the women are dreamers they are strong women, independent, headstrong and full of strength to face life.

With Caterina’s sculptures woman retrieves her femininity, real and assuring generous in shape, full of grace, strength and vitality.
A full body evoking and idea of wellbeing of pleasure and happiness. The woman with wide hips is a symbol of love and beauty and the memory of the mother and of the lover.
There is not sadness in the face of the Muse nothing in common with melancholic caricatures of Botero, the Columbian artist famous for his big women.

Kath Girdler Engler

"Kath Girdler Engler's sculptures are appealing both in physical form and through her interpretation of mythical stories. They are the fragments of ancient forms combined with Engler's own understanding of the human body. Her confidence with the overall form allows her to be playful with the details as she imbeds materials that fit the negative shapes in her sculptures. Paper pulp is an unusual medium and it's durable nature is the perfect material to distress in imitation of age. But Engler is always able to emphasize the large contour lines that elegantly wrap around suprise materials in crevices and joints of her sculptures." Susan Shockley, Curator, Parthenon Museum

N Tuan -  Tuan Nguyen

The story of N.Tuan, creator of the inspirational Vietnam War Memorial in Westminster, California; the dramatically spiritual bronze of Saint Therese “the little flower” in Mobile, Alabama; the breathtaking collection of heroic sculptures in Kuhn Development Corporation in Orlando, Plaza in Orlando, Florida and a vast collection of other outstanding bronze sculptures, began in Saigon, South Vietnam when Tuan was born into a family of wealth, privilege and royal lineage.
The early years for Tuan were carefree, surrounded by family and friends and insolated from the war that raged in the countryside. Life was good, up until the fall of Saigon on April 30th, 1975. Overnight, Tuan’s life was turned upside-down; oppression gripped the country and freedom and privilege became relics of the past.
Tuan’s father, a well known and respected architect, was taken away to be “re-educated”, the family compound was divided up and life became harsh and restrictive. The whole of South Vietnam changed from a country fighting to retain its freedom to one unified under the oppression of Communist rule.
In a way, the return of Tuan’s father from the re-education camp began shaping Tuan into the man we know today. Having refused to work for the Communists, Tuan’s father turned to his love of sculpting to help maintain his sanity and at his side was his son Tuan. Day after day they sculpted together, the mentor and his student, and even though they did not always agree on style and composition, Tuan began to learn the skills that were to lead him to his destiny.
The oppression of the Communist régime created an overwhelming desire within the young Tuan to regain his freedom, eventually leading him to a near-fatal escape attempt. This failed attempt to escape the grip of the Communists landed him in a force labor camp that would have broken a lesser man, but instead, Tuan created opportunity by using the red clay from the floor of his cell to sculpt the likenesses of fellow prisoners. These prison sculptures helped to make prison life more bearable for the young artist. After six long months in the prison camp and eighteen more months of hard labor, Tuan’s family was able to arrange for his release.
With the support of his family, especially his father with whom he continued to sculpt, Tuan grew stronger and more confident with each passing day until he decided to put it all on the line for freedom once again. This time, after two arduous months struggling through the jungles of Southeast Asia, facing danger at every turn, he succeeded in escaping through Cambodia to Thailand. He was assigned to a refugee camp in Thailand for a year before being transferred to the Philippines where he learned English and created sculptures to honor escapees before gaining sponsorship to the United States where he finally found true freedom in 1988.
After gaining some hands-on experience at a bonze foundry in Northern California and living the life of a starving artist for a time, Tuan moved to Southern California to study fine art at the prestigious Art Institute of Southern California in Laguna Beach for five years before dedicating his life to making the world a more beautiful place with his art and furthering the world’s understanding of the " Existential Balance" and its importance to the human experience.
“My sincere hope is that my art will successfully stimulate others to see the beauty of this world and to accept its balance. Balance is central to existence and is a basic human need; to lead a balanced life is to find its center.” – N.Tuan
In 1994 the National Sculpture Society in New York honored Tuan for being a young sculptor with a meritorious body of work by presenting his with the coveted Gloria Medal. In 1995 he was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal for sculpture by the California Art Club and in 1998 he won the national competition for the design and sculpting of the Vietnam War Memorial by the city of Westminster, California.
Some of the most beautiful and timeless sculptures to be found anywhere bear the mark of N.Tuan. From the breathtaking heroic soldiers at the Vietnam War Memorial in Westminster, California, his awe-inspiring larger-than-life sculpture of Saint Therese “the little flower” in Mobile, Alabama and romantic “Rendezvous” overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Laguna Beach, California to the vast body of his works that grace private and public collections the sculptures of Tuan enriched the lives of countless art patrons and promise to touch even more lives in decades to come.
“Art is vital for me. It is almost a religion. It means to believe in people, in life, in love. It is a response to what is beautiful and simple. As an artist I do what I do for no other purpose than to express my feelings.” – N.Tuan

Miguel Guía is a sculptor with great modelling skill. His practical character can be clearly perceived in the creations shown in this collection. His sculptures, far from being stalic, give us a sensation of dynamic balance, based on strengths relation.

Parting from the reality of recognizable objects, his works are shifted by cubist planes, and by deleting the accidental, the no essential, he reaches the extreme schemalism of the shape.

These are works with dramatic strength, very evocative, that notwithstanding their modernity, keep up with a classic order and internal balance which shine through their external skin. Artist in constantly being inspired by the masters he's admiring: Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, Eduardo Chillada, Oteiza, Jacques Lipchitz, Alexander Archipenko, Julio González (Maestro de Picasso) and Juan Gris.

"I was raised on the Texas Gulf Coast, in a small farming and ranching community. I moved to Kansas City, Missouri to attend classes at the Kansas City Art Institute, where I received my bachelor’s degree in fine art in 1997. I relocated to Ventura, California in 2001, and my husband and I moved back to Kansas City in the spring of 2005. I've done illustrations for books, magazines, and album covers over the years, but I'm really happy doing my own thing these days.

Currently I'm represented by the Blue Gallery in Kansas City, but have exhibited all over the country.

I have a studio in the attic of our house where I work on my larger oil paintings, but I usually set up my watercolor paints right in the dining room to work on small pieces and ACEOs. (ACEOs are small works of art that measure 2.5 x 3.5 inches, trading card size. ACEO is an acronym for Artist Cards, Editions and Originals.) I can paint at the dining table and still keep an eye on my kids, dinner, etc, etc. My set-up is simple and easy to put away for mealtimes.

I have a regular day job that's pretty interesting: I work as an auction house manager for the KC Auction Company and I'm a CAGA certified personal property appraiser, evaluating antiques, fine art,and other things. We deal in antiques, art, glass, pottery, coins, jewelry, etc. Because we sell things on consignment, you just never know what will come into the auction house on any given day. I've seen some amazing pieces and the last 6 years have been a learning experience on so many levels; not just about antiques, but a lot about human psychology too.

A lot of people ask where I get ideas and inspiration for paintings. The ideas really do come from all over: looking at old photos or costumes or fashion books, conversations (usually overheard--I love eavesdropping. Shameful.), dreams... Sometimes just sitting down and drawing without thinking of anything in particular will produce something cool. Music is definitely something I'm passionate about (my husband and I met working together at a record store), and it plays an important role in my work as well. And I love looking at stuff! Fashion, architecture, art, design, interiors--there's so much to see and so much to get excited about, just that in itself makes me want to paint."

"Vishal is another up coming member of the team who has devoted himself to this project wholeheartedly. He possesses a diploma in engineering, which he says, helps him as an artist. He boldly gave up his job at the age of thirty-four to devote full time to his passion of drawing. He likes to draw portraits, still life and of course realism.
In his own words he says '...this project ...inspired me to know and read more about them (great Indian Heroes) and that in itself was a great experience...I am simply proud to be Indian.' He has enjoyed working on this project and produced some memorable and inspiring paintings like Operation Vijay, K L Saigal and as can be seen has managed to pump life into Birsa Munda's painting. He has evolved with the project and his style has seen a great improvement.
The Art society of India honoured him with the best portrait award in 1996. His works hang proudly in India, U. S. A. and Europe. He has held many exhibitions in India."quote
