Isaac Cordal

Street Artist and Public Artist Isaac Cordal has just finished his most expansive installation of his little corporate and military men to date in Nantes, the city once known as the European capital of the human slave trade. “Follow the Leaders” is “a critical reflection on our inertia as a social mass,” explains Cordal as he describes the massive installation of about 2000 individual pieces.
quote

Spanish artist Isaac Cordal has an unconventional approach to public art. While most street artists seek to work on an increasingly larger scale, painting the facades of buildings with the aid cherry pickers, Cordal builds miniature sculptures that he hides in unexpected places. A critique of capitalism (in Cordal’s native country, the world-wide economic recession hit especially hard), Cordal’s work focuses on the mass-produced quality of today’s society. Miniature business men in suits are found in forgotten corners of urban sprawl. Cordal uses his environment to stage poignant scenes with the sculptures as his protagonists. Isaac Cordal is opening his debut US solo show at Anno Domini in San Jose, CA tonight, September 5, and the show will run through October 19. Take a look at some of Cordal’s work for the show as well as some street interventions below.

quote

Laurie Goldstein-Warren

I am Laurie Goldstein-Warren and I live in West Virginia.

I have been painting watercolors for fourteen years. Art has always been a part of my life. When I was young, ballet, tap and jazz dancing was my creative outlet. I was a dancer in the Rochester Academy of Performing Arts dance troupe until the age of 18. Later on my creative path took me to hair styling. I opened my own salon in New York and competed in fantasy hair competitions. I loved these particular shows because you had to create something never seen before, more avante garde than styles you would see on the street. When I moved to West Virginia in 1998 and found myself in the countryside, I went back to one of my first creative loves, art.

After many years of studying the art of watercolor with some fantastic teachers and mentors, I have been so fortunate to have found success in this field. My artwork has been shown all over this country and was exhibited in China last year. I now enjoy teaching my limited palette techniques in portrait workshops and jurying exhibits around the country.

I found my voice in art… find yours….Create!

Artist Statement

I love to capture people in watercolor. I am intrigued by human emotion and the human experience. I intuitively choose the people I paint. They represent the common man, those who are not often noticed but still have their story to tell. I want to capture that moment and reveal the emotion behind the mask. Through the transparency of watercolor, I build the character and complexity of a person, layer by layer. It is about capturing the person, the moment and the light. I work from black and white photographs taken during events or while traveling. The black and white format gives me the opportunity to see contrast clearly and allows me to create my own palette.

SYLVAIN LEFEBVRE (SYLEF):
TIMELESS VOYAGES

"The sea…if you knock on her door, you will see that if she lets you in, you will never leave again. We go back a long way, the sea and me, and these ships draw us together. Maybe this is why, when I am with her, I never feel alone. I have not actually asked her yet but I guess, if I am still alive today, she must also care for me. Even though, as with any other old couple, neither her nor me will ever raise the subject.
I had sailed for so long on her belly that one day it occurred to me that I had become more a man of the sea than of the land: I have spent more time treading metal gangways and exotic wood decks than walking on dry land. I have not actually finished listing all the ships I helped keep afloat…
Ships like these are no more or have all but disappeared. Some have sunk to the bottom of the ocean, others, which have risen to the skies might well still be sailing above the clouds. Who knows?
Some of them were more fun loving and others more serious in nature but all undoubtedly had a soul; their soul was borne out of human obstinacy − obstinacy is a form of self-belief, this is what drives you to create the impossible…
These ships were impossible. They would challenge nature and scoff at it… Just like a house of cards in stormy seas.
They had a spirit but even encased in steel, a spirit is somewhat fragile. We could compare this to an image on a negative inside a film compartment, which, exposed to the light, disappears only to be replaced by memories… My memories."

'Artist Jo March was born in 1962 and brought up on a family farm in the small Cornish moorland village of Darite in South East Cornwall. In 1985, she graduated with first class honours in History from the University of Sheffield, and returned to the pull of Cornwall, beginning her career as a self taught professional artist.

Jo March's upbringing, living in the Cornish landscape and the people that she met, has been a strong influence on her choice of subject and the depiction of landscape in her paintings. Inspiration for Jo's paintings and limited edition prints is often drawn from the environment and the people of her childhood. She has abiding fascination with the eccentricities which exist just below the surface of rural life and in particular the characters that she observed in Cornwall whilst growing up.
Modern life is gradually and inexorably eroding age-old patterns of life and systems of belief. Jo March landscape paintings are an attempt to capture the essence of the bucolic farm land which has hitherto changed so little in Cornwall.

In addition to her skill as a landscape artist, Jo is also a very accomplished figure painter and her paintings of children are quite captivating. She has also displayed a unique talent for painting greyhounds and has been commissioned to paint Farloe Verdict, the winner of the English and Scottish Greyhound Derbys in 2003 and 2004 respectively.'

Printmaker, illustrator, and lecturer. Works published in New York Times, as well as American and European publications including Kniga/ Moscow and Anaya/ Madrid.
Born in Lviv, Ukraine. Graduated Lviv Polygraphic Institute in Fine Arts, 1971.
Pictures and graphic papers of Yuri Tchary amaze with their plastic orchestration. Combining lines and flatnesses into an image, before penetrating into the subject you enjoy this endless play of fragmentations and interchanges, this richness of the space in plastic events - in a word, all magic of purely artistic making which Tchary certainly masters best of all in the world. And whatever would be portrayed by the master- catharsis is guaranteed by that how it has been done. Fixedness of drawing, another characteristic feature of Tchary's compositions, was a result of unprecedented sensitiveness of the eye to the scales of “not-light” from the fathomless dark to the lightest white. Light colour symphonies of work on the paper testified: Tchary sees, distinguishes and embodies what the ordinary eye doesn’t see, doesn’t distinguish. But the talent for displaying invisible to the world is given to the artist not only in the sphere of eurhythmics. He is granted to make visible form of that innermost weightlessness, which is called human soul.

Andrei Gennadiev

Andrei Gennadiev

The art of contemporary Sankt-Petersburg artist Andrei Gennadiev blends old Russian traditions with modern twentieth-century expression. Influences upon him range from iconography of Byzantine art to the metaphysical concepts of those Sankt-Petersburg artists who became known as "The Sankt-Petersburg Group". Indeed, the "programme" of the latter group states that "the icon is the most complete and perfect form of the revelation of Beauty of the world. It was they desire to create a new style of painting based on icon's harmonious beauty of design, depth of lyrical filing and bright, complex colour relationships.

Mysticism, which permeates Russian art and thinking also pervades Gennadiev's work. The artist's striving to preserve spiritual values,to penetrate, aesthetic, ethical, and religious strata of life is summed up in his declaration that: " Art is an intermediary between the soul and the surrounding world. It should give man opportunity to explore himself and to better evaluate the events that overtake him.

Metaphysical symbols from a variety of cultures and eras are evident throughout Gennadiev's art. Reaching back to ancient Egypt, the artist uses their astral-occult signs as well as traditional Egyptian form and color. And like the fifteen-century Dutch artist Hieronimus Bosch, Gennadiev employs esoteric Christian symbols in his work.

Andrei is an artist who works in several media. He is an accomplished painter as well as printmaker who excels in lithography and etching. Based on his personal interpretation of nature he creates finely controlled images. By combining a variety of symbols and decorative elements, the artist lends mystery and secrecy to his works. Signs of the zodiac, the fish,a heart of a house, and Chinese symbols are frequently integrated in Gennadiev's etching and lithographs. Like the German-Swiss painter Paul Klee with his "ideographic style",Gennadiev wants his signs to be evocative as visual facts and, at the same time, to stimulate our thinking. He believes that his variations of color and composition in placing these symbols will affect each viewer differently. In fact, his combination of abstract forms and vibrating colors often creates high tension. To explain his use of signs, Gennadiev says: "At different times, I was preoccupied with astrology, palmistry,Eastern culture and Christianity. From each I adopted what was indispensable for the expression of my thoughts and ideas."

The most striking Gennadiev prints are his hand-colored etching. the appeal of these works is their elegant yet enigmatic design and their luminous jewel-like colors. The artist's use of intense red, blue, purple, ore green colors against a black background creates a pulsating sensation. He uses colour blends and deeper tones to magnify the luminosity of a new colour. Touches of gold or silver create a radiance reminiscent of medieval icons and book illuminations. The impact of Gennadiev's colors is often heightened by his fantastic interpretation of his subject matter. Familiar objects are given a surreal treatment.

This complex Russian artist has participated in numerous exhibitions in Russia as well as aboard. His works were first introduced in the United States by International Images in 1984. Gennadiev's artwork are in many museum collections. Asked to describe his artistic credo, Gennadiev explains that " a unity of thought, feeling and action is important. One has only to observe Gennadiev's works of art to realize how successfully he transforms his underlying philosophy into unique images.

Simon Garden Artist"Occasionally, just occasionally, one comes across an artist whose work sets the heart beating uncommonly fast. Simon Garden's paintings do just that, drawing the viewer into an extraordinary world, part imaginary, part real"

- Brian Sinfield Gallery

"Garden succeeds in mapping the landscapes of our dreams. He communicates directly to our subconscious, unhindered by rationality. His paintings invite a gut-wrenching sense of personal familiarity and recognition"

- Beaux Arts, Bath

"The rare simplicity and purity of vision in his painting arouses the subconscious and fires the imagination. He is an artist who creates a sense of composition that is classically beautiful and at the same time, daring"

- Red Rag Gallery

"The paintings of Simon Garden reveal a parallel world of haunting mystery ....of legends and myths and memories of long ago, all imbued with a golden light and an atmosphere of suspense"

- Derek Balmer, President, Royal West of England Academy

"His work suggests the stuff of myth and legend, but it is never directly translated. The narrative is always oblique, leaving space for invention. Bruegel-like, his creatures, human or animal, immerse themselves in their own concerns"

- Evolver Books - Fifty Wessex Artists

Simon Garden was born in 1960. He studied at Art Exeter School of Art and Design, graduating with a BA (Hons) 1st Class, Fine Art in 1982. In 2002 Simon Garden was elected as an Academician by The Royal West of England Academy of Art.

The talent of artist Simon Garden was acknowledged early in his art career when as a young artist the first showcase exhibition of his contemporary paintings was snapped up within hours of being displayed. Since then Simon Garden has gone from strength to strength building a strong reputation for imaginative and creative British art. Simon Garden has also had a number of successful one man solo art painting shows and participated in various open contemporary art exhibitions.

Simon Garden uses seductive rich colour and texture in his modern contemporary paintings. He is an artist who creates a sense of composition that is classically beautiful whilst at the same time daring. Simon Garden strips his landscapes and nudes down to their most elemental forms. This rare simplicity and purity of vision in his painting arouses the subconscious and fires the imagination, drawing us irresistibly into a world both dreamlike and timelessness.

Simon Garden paintings are regularly shown at the Royal West of England Academy for Art. Garden paintings have also featured at other major British Art Exhibitions such as The Hunting Art Prize. Today Simon Garden has obtained a strong presence in many British Art collections. His contemporary paintings also appear is many private art collections in the USA, Holland, Australia, Japan and Germany.

In addition to Red Rag British Art Gallery Simon Garden has exhibited at other leading British Art Galleries. Each painting at Red Rag is sourced from the Simon Garden artist studio and like all Red Rag British art and Contemporary art it can be shipped worldwide.
