Elizabeth Colomba

Born and raised in France, on the outskirts of Paris, amid the rich inspiring Caribbean heritage of her family, Elizabeth Colomba's life as an artist began in early childhood: “ I was six years old when I initially told my mother, I will be a painter… She patted me on the head, and insinuated I either have to win the lottery or be Picasso… As I was contemplating my two choices, 2 years went by… The school I was in, wanted to do something special for father’ s day, and decided that we would be copying a master work of art of our choice, as a gift for this significant occasion. My Van Gogh counterfeit made my parents ecstatic, and assured me off what I wanted to be.”

Elizabeth Colomba attended the high school of art in Paris. After receiving her degree in applied arts she continued her studies, continuing to paint and to intensively develop her own style. Upon graduation from college she achieved a first class honors degree and most importantly, a mastery of an individual style and artistic expression. In the late nineties, after trying out her skills in the world of advertising, Colomba moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in painting and storyboarding, working on feature films like Romeo and Juliet, One Hour Photo, Jesse James, ASingle Man, and several others.

Colomba begins the creative process inspired by faces, rooms, or even clothing, which spark her imagination, and evolves from there. She often begins by drawing nude figures; she then follows by creating sketches of several clothed figures, settled in a space, surrounded by meaningful objects. It is this careful preparation that leads to the very detailed style of painting she is creating.

When asked who her artistic heroes are, Elizabeth Colomba eloquently replies, “I'd like to have Sargent’s touch, Caravaggio's light, Degas' vision, Vermeer's inscrutability and Velázquez's knowledge”. The influence of each can be seen in Elizabeth Colomba's work.

For Elizabeth Colomba, painting is primal. She can't think of living without doing it. To say it in other words, she lives to paint. The roots of her artistic expression are cerebral: Leonardo da Vinci was right, 'Painting is a mental act.'

Elizabeth Colomba

"What's in a name? That which we call a Rose by any other name would smell (just) as sweet.”— Shakespeare

In this aphorism Sir William advocates Otherness. And it is this sweet Otherness that thrives in Colomba's work. In it she infiltrates, subverts and re-defines our collective memory of Black people and Black culture; pigmentizing a History that in the West has been written and transmitted as bleached.

The artist's pursuit is that of a perceptual paradigm shift in which Black people will no longer be remembered as being portrayed playing banjos in raggedy clothes or smiling meekly at an absent observer. Her paintings re-define not only how Black people have been conditioned to exist, but also how Black people have been conditioned to reflect upon themselves. They address the heirs of the African diaspora, who, in Colomba's words will find 'a dignifying self-image in my work, a portrayal that blurs racial lines. An environment in which each individual will find mutual respect and freedom unrelated to the color of their skin."

It is this erasure of the Other that Colomba's work is about. Her paintings don't 'insert' Black people into the oeuvre of Western art. They rather generate a space for her subjects to inhabit the re-writing of their history, a history that honors their presence and place in and through culture and time.

Black people are an integral part of world history and have undoubtedly played a decisive role in the shaping of cultures. Their cultural and pictorial representation, however, was essentially invisible or denied before the 20th Century. Prior to Picasso's or Braque's 'insertion' of Black culture into Western art, Black people were depicted as anonymous, less-than-human entities deprived of the right of presence. Their place in the Oeuvre of art was secondary or tertiary at best. Their social status undeserving of other more respectable depictions.

Colomba's work is born through collision and reconciliation. By co-opting and re-configuring Western myths, religious iconography and folklore —historically written in white ink—she de-territorializes the areas in our psyche that have been conditioned to label and suppress the Other. Her images take place at instances of anticipation or aftermath, thereby holding a present that has not-yet happened and not-yet passed. The content and countenance of her paintings are deliberately classical, representational. Her subjects however, are not.

Colomba's paintings depict 'traditional' historical and literary subjects as Black, enabling the artist to challenge our inherited perceptual modes of socio-political conditioning. In this manner, she utilizes the same pictorial methods and techniques which have generated and sustained these socio-political conditions to subvert and integrate a sense of Otherness into our collective psyche. Her message is an egalitarian one of beauty in co-existence.

"SO ... WHAT'S A CBABI?

... WELL LET ME TELL YOU.
IT'S A CREATIVE BLACK ARTIST BATTLING IGNORANCE
SO GUESS WHAT.....YOU CAN BE A "CBABI" TOO! I DON'T MIND.

but seriously, i'm a husband, father, and then a painter. i've been blessed with a supportive family and i am just getting started in this art thang y'all. please come along for the ride. i feel it getting real exciting!

Cbabi (pronounced Kuh-bob-bi) Bayoc is an artist who has always known, and lived, his calling: creating art which reflects his love of music and family. This was in fact the reason he changed his name in 1997 from Clifford Miskell to Cbabi Bayoc. He wanted a name that when said always sent him a reminder of his purpose in life.

Cbabi stands for Creative Black Artist Battling Ignorance and Bayoc (which he waited for his wife to discover) stands for Blessed African Youth of Creativity. Cbabi wanted to have a last name that included the attributes of the wife he was going to bear children with because the last name, he felt, should reflect both parents and not just the father."

Campbell Jane is a full-time Christian Artist/Painter. Lives in Northern California right in the heart of Gold Country. Was born in South Carolina & has lived in Japan , Arizona & finally California.

"My art is inspired by sweet things in my life, my loving family , my friends and sometimes by my goofy sense of humor. My life is filled with music, artful things & loving people.I fell in love with faces in the early 90's after taking portrait classes with a former Art Director of Disney. I love the fun house effect, most of their eyes will follow you, watch over you. The human face is not symetrical, by exaggerating this feature, it is my intention to capture a greater sense of personality & emotions. There seems to be a few sides to everybody..."

Michael Chapman  (b. 1957)

"With his own unique language, Michael Chapman interprets the world around him. His themes are thoroughly modern, addressing the perception of reality and it’s mutability. The parallels between his work and that of Edward Hopper are striking: geometric motifs, suggested narratives, and interiors with views through a window. But Chapman describes the relationship as indirect, one that is responsive rather than imitative.
Over the past nine years, the artist’s themes and subjects – beach scenes, interiors, city streets, trees and parks, and nocturnes- have become increasingly more complex in their content and composition. Consistently featuring such objects as fire hydrants, chairs, tables, cars, and trains. Chapman continually reconceives their arrangements, explaining that he has a “vocabulary of subject matter” that interests him. “I resolve the same ideas in different ways,” he says. “My mind keeps working on them without being conscious of it. It’s almost as if it’s a matter of time before I will come up with a final solution.”"

Aaron Paquette

Aaron Paquette is the creator and founder of the Cree8 Success philosophy. As a troubled youth he struggled and wandered through depression, poverty, and confusion. He came to a crisis one morning on the guardrails of Edmonton's High Level Bridge. Though he didn't yet know his path he finally knew there was one for him and over the years developed a method of finding happiness and success that changed his life forever. He shares this message through his paintings and has garnered national exposure and interest for his work. He has been seen and heard in various media including documentaries about his life, interviews, and news articles.

He has been seen on Bravo, CTV, CityTV and heard on CBC, Aboriginal Voices Radio, and across Canada.

Aaron believes everyone can succeed if given the proper tools and methods to tap into their own personal truths and power and draws from his Metis and Cree background to teach these concepts. In demand to appear as a presenter, speaker, and trainer he has come a long way from the lost youth that saw no value in his own life.

His unique understanding of the personal challenges people face and how they achieve success on their own terms with the amazing power of their own creativity is reinventing the way people approach careers, money, and belonging in the New World.

"In my paintings, I seek to nurture a relationship with the viewer. I try to use colours that are calm and soothing, but also fresh and exciting. My goal is to create work that a person can be comfortable with and can invite into their home. In this manner, I hope to deliver a message. In each painting I try to include a story that is meaningful to me and encourages discussion. I hope that my work can act as part of a catalyst for greater understanding. I feel that it is important to allow art to be beautiful while conveying deep and sometimes very serious meaning. My work almost always features an aspect of nature and our relationship with the earth."

"I am a young, self-taught artist(An artist Or rather, in the process of becoming one, as I am still learning the finer aspects of artistry) from India. Since childhood, I have a keen interest in painting, especially watercolors. During school days, I managed to win four gold medals and one silver medal as well as many others. Though trained as a chemical engineer, my born urge made me take up painting with zest once again. I like to portray my subjects as they are. Speaking of subjects, I prefer my subjects to be different, far removed from the daily monotonous regularity of life. For example, the devotee at eh ashram, the Bonda tribeswoman..and yes, being an Indian, I am a bit more inclined to portray the spectacle, the wonder that is my country, my land , on my paper as much as possible. I consider myself as a beginner, a newbie, a student. And as being a student, curiosity comes naturally to me,and it is this curiosity that drives me, motivates me to paint ,to put my ideas, my perspective of the world around me into the paper."

Born in Taranto in 1972 from Antonio and Lucia Troilo. Lives and works in Milan. From 1997 till 2009 he worked for several international advertising agencies, such as Saatchi & Saatchi and Arnold Worldwide, as Art Director first, then as Creative Director. He won the most prestigious international awards in the industry, and in 2007 he was nominated best Italian creative together with Alessandro Sabini. Self-taught artist. He started drawing by pencil at the age of 4, and never stopped since. In April 2005 he started his career as professional artist, and as a result of this long, unconscious stage of preparation towards a future change, he then starts painting with his fingers. Now we see him dipping his fingertips into jars of acrylic, black and ivory, and spreading color, definitely abandoning the "tools of the art". On April 21st 2010, in the city of Palermo, together with Brio, they become the proud parents of Antonio. His best piece of art.

Painting and drawing serve as a physically enacted ritual of praise and contemplation, aspiring towards a devout pursuit of a severe beauty. It is an aesthetic of imperfection alluding to the underlying nature of matter and memory: everything is subject to age, wear & decay. Yet, obstinately, the invisible is made visible, suspended in the mythical timelessness of the medium – still, but never silent; wherein, this uncertain truth is knowingly implied to antagonize the loneliness of our lives. Therein, it may be countenanced, stared down, transfigured, and treated.

A more grounded discussion of my work begins with considering its "operatic" tone. I exact a preference for hyperbole and "psychological" texture in my work. It comes, as most art forms, from reflections on my life (episodes, experiences, etc.). And, it is imagery that I explore specific to painting within the confines of self-portraiture that typically runs counter to modern western notions of beauty. I re-render the flesh of friends and relations (lasting & temporary) serving as a surrogate for me by “compositing” my imagery from a variety of observed, imaginary and digital sources. In so doing, I seek to continue to resolve/meld both “low” and “high” influences with a conscious restraint airing on subtlety to yield tension.

Among the influences that orbit my visual mind are Japanese popular/fringe culture from Butoh to anime stemming from my early fandom of Toho films (notably, featuring Godzilla) to an early introduction to anime via UHF PBS broadcasting subtitled anime in the early 70s/80s airing from New Jersey, whilst I wistfully watched on my parent’s bed (their TV was the only one to clearly received the signal, so that I could watch “Captain Harlock” every Sunday night), western comic book art (particularly the “Silver Age” of Marvel Comics), as well as Northern Renaissance Art (for example; Jan Van Eyck, Hans Memling)

Adolf Vondra

Painter Adolf Vondra was born in 1932 in Kovářov nearby the South Bohemian town of Písek. He commenced his art education as a student of ceramics and porcelain painting at the State Ceramics School in Bechyně, while simultaneously preparing for enrollment in the Prague Academy of Fine Arts. Recognised as an exceptionally gifted candidate he was admitted at the early age of 16. He studied under leading Czech artists M. Holý and Vladimĺr Sychra, the latter being his tutor in the field of monumental painting. Under his guidance Vondra created his first major work intended for public display: the frescoes for the interior of Prague's Bethlehem Chapel. An excellent student, he was awarded an extra three-year honorary scholarship at the Academy, followed by training at the Oscar Kokoschka School of Colour Vision in Salzburg. Upon his return from Austria he settled in Prague for good.

Vondra specialises mainly in portrait and figural paintings.

He is also appreciated as an illustrator. His drawings and pastels grace many books by contemporary Czech poets and fiction writers.

As a painter, Vondra draws additional feedback from his work as stage designer in the service of the Prague Municipal Theatres and other prominent Czech stages, esp. those in Brno, Karlovy Vary, Mladá Boleslav, Hradec Králové etc.

His original artistic orientation stood him in good stead a few years ago in the course of a truly grandiose project-renovating the pseudo-renaissance sgraffito façade of the Stříbro Town Hall in West Bohemia.

His works are displayed in the South Bohemian Gallery in Hluboká, other art galleries throughout the Czech Republic and in private collections in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Turkey and the United States. He has exhibited in some of these countries and in France.

Adolf Vondra is a member of the prominent Czech art society Mánes.
