Ricardo Chavez Mendez

BIOGRAPHY
Born in Torréon, Coahuila, Mexico, self-taught artist, Ricardo Chávez-Méndez has earned the nickname, 'Dali of the Desert,' by Airbrush Action Magazine. Currently he is introducing the style 'Curvismo™' or curvism by way of teaching and gaining a following into the movement.

ARTIST STATEMENT
'Art presents itself with a certain kind of energy proceeding from our innermost being where logic nor intellect can be art. At the present time there are many people who believe themselves to be artists, just because they are able to paint on a piece of fabric. Art demands discipline and dedication. Art is the most beautiful way to express the talents that man has inherited; that is why it should not be taken as a means of satisfying the 'ego', nor a 'pose' in regard to society. Consequently Art should only have one purpose in mind: to create. ~ Ricardo Chávez-Méndez

"Florida is my native home. After growing up in Miami I lived for four wonderful years in Caribou Maine beginning my formal education in fine art at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. I then relocated to Richmond Virginia. It was there where I raised my son while earning my BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Fine Art.Later,I returned to South Florida to live and work full time on my art.

My paintings are my poetry. They are inspired by grace found in the natural world and by the reverence inherent in the sanctuary of peace. I take refuge in the making of my art...it's my intention to create for the viewer a connection to that place "Where dreams live and poets speak"."

Peace to you.

"My paintings hover somewhere between reality and fantasy.
Still life remains my favorite, though not only, genre. My love of textiles, and training as a textile designer, is often apparent, especially in my use of block printed repeat patterns throughout my paintings as a means of creating texture and warmth and depth of color.

There is so much in our contemporary world to make us feel terrible, and yet there is so much beauty, as well. I want my paintings to make me and all viewers feel some joy."

"Although I have some formal education in painting and drawing techniques, my conceptual approach comes from within. The paintings are built like stage sets in an attempt to draw the viewer in and decide what it means. I pit light against dark, echoing that same tension within each of us. I've also begun to incorporate imagery based on my love of all that is wild; including our own inner wilderness...

My work is about transformation and reflects my own growth and experiences. Within the past few years I have gone through enormous personal change and I have embraced this in my new paintings: I am now including imagery of the seas, influenced by a new passion for diving. Recent works also reflect my new-found sense of exhilaration, optimism and an appetite for adventure and exploring the world. My intention with each painting is to offer the viewer a sense that they can enter into the image and wander there alone - and in wonder, like I am now at this stage of my life, at the mystery and drama unfolding in every second we are alive.

Born and raised along the Hudson River Valley, I moved to Phoenix, AZ in my late 20's and lived there for approximately 10 years. Even though I now live in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, I have spent much of my time in recent years traveling, always to be near the sea. And I have made many friends around the world whom I consider my family."

Vera Rockline -1896-1934

Vera Schlezinger Rockline was born in Moscow in 1896.
She was a student of Alexandra Exter in Kiev before
moving to Paris.

Rockline arrived in Paris shortly after World War One, and settled in the Montparnasse district. She began exhibiting in Paris in 1922 at the Salon des Indépendants. She also exhibited at the Salon d’Automne, and the Salon des Tuileries.

Rockline’s early work shows the influence of Cubism, obviously influenced by her mentor Alexandra Exter, but her coloration was more subtle; more in the manner of Cezanne. She almost exclusively painted nudes and a few portraits. She incorporated her cubist tendencies into her unique postimpressionist style; with use of bold brush strokes and rich colors she created stunning works of modern beauty.

In Montparnasse at this time there was a large Russian community with which Rockline was certainly familiar. She died at the young age of 38 years old, cutting short a brilliant career.

As with many women artists of her generation she is now finding her place in history, she was recently included the an exhibition at the Musée du Montparnasse called “Elles de Montparnasse.” Here her paintings were exhibited along side Tamara de Lempicka, Jacqueline Marval, Maria Blanchard, Natalia Gontcharova, Popova, and many more of her contemporaries.

Vera Rockline -

Before I became a painter I spent 15 years honing my skills in the field of illustration. Doing editorial work for various publications. I began to transition to fine art in 2003. At that time I rented studio space to a great painter named C.W. Mundy. It was a great learning experience to have someone of his caliber right down the hall. I learned quite a bit which leads me to where I am today. My paintings are urban scenes taken from here in Chicago. I also use my art skills in the classroom as well. I use it as a visual aid for teaching students in special education for the Chicago Public Schools.

Jenny Scobel

Jenny Scobel (born 1955) is an American painter who lives and works in New York. She makes paintings of women and children weaving a sense of innocence with foreboding or darkness. Her works, compared to Romaine Brooks, have been auctioned at Christie's and Sotheby's.

Jenny Scobel was born in Orrville, Ohio. At Cleveland Institute of Art, Scobel received her Bachelor of Fine Arts. She received her Master of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute.

She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York

Scobel makes portraits or figurative paintings of children and women that blend a scene of innocent-like faces with images that suggest an underlying dark or disturbing story. The subtle mixed messages creates a "disarming perspective" and "present a mature approach to creating complex and disarming works. Family tree of a young girl in the foreground, hands in her pockets and a disturbing background of a tree and running blood is one example. She often works in wax and graphite.Journalist Kristin Capp likened her work to that of Romaine Brooks.

Raphael Rubinstein of Art In America said "Scobel is an artist whose attention to detail reaches manic (and sublime) proportions. She poses her subjects - in this show, pensive young women - against wallpaper per whose intricate motifs would exhaust a less patient artist. These backgrounds often seem to reveal the subjects' thoughts, as if the women had dreamed the allegorical scenes into existence."

She gives lectures, such as the April 7, 2010 engagement at the School of Art at Illinois State.

Hovsep Pushman

Hovsep Pushman (1877 - 1966)

Hovsep Pushman was an American artist of Armenian background. He was known for his contemplative still lifes and sensitive portraits of women, often in exotic dress. He was most closely associated during his lifetime with the Grand Central Art Galleries, which represented him from its opening in 1922 until his death in 1966.

Hovsep Pushman was born in 1877  and grew up in the town of Dikranagerd in Asia Minor, where his family, originally "Pushmanian," was in the carpet business. Pushman showed artistic ability early, and at age 11 was the youngest student ever admitted to Istanbul's Imperial School of Fine Arts.

In 1896 Pushman's family emigrated to Chicago, where he studied Chinese culture, immersing himself in Asian art, and began to teach at the age of 17. He then moved to Paris and studied at the Académie Julian under Jules Joseph Lefebvre, Tony Robert-Fleury and Adolphe Déchenaud Pushman exhibited his work at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he won medals in 1914 and 1921. Pushman returned to the United States in 1914, and in 1916 moved to Riverside, California, living at the city's Mission Inn until 1919. There he accepted some portrait commissions, including one that still hangs at the inn.  In 1918 Pushman and a group of California painters founded the Laguna Beach Art Association; the same year he was awarded the California Art Club's Ackerman Prize.

After his time in California Pushman spent several years in Paris. He opened his own studio in 1921 and, with the encouragement of Robert-Fleury, concentrated his efforts on exotic portraits and still lifes of carefully arranged objects he had collected. According to James Cox, former director of the Grand Central Art Galleries, which represented Pushman for much of his life:

"[Pushman's] paintings typically featured oriental idols, pottery and glassware, all glowing duskily as if illuminated by candlelight. They were symbolic, spiritual paintings, and were sometimes accompanied by readings, which help explain their allegorical significance. Most important, they were exquisitely beautiful, executed with technical precision."

In 1923 Pushman returned yet again to the United States and settled in New York City. His connection to the Grand Central Art Galleries began when he befriended Erwin Barrie, who once managed Carson Pirie Scott's art collection. Barrie introduced the artist to Walter Leighton Clark, who was in the process of establishing the Galleries. When Clark secured space in New York City's Grand Central Terminal, Barrie was hired as director and he encouraged Pushman to join the Grand Central Art Galleries. Pushman set up his studio in the Carnegie Hall building, where he created the remarkable works he showed at the Galleries:

"Erwin Barrie maintained a separate velvet-walled salon for the exclusive use of Pushman. The only illumination allowed on his paintings were specially designed reflector lights attached to the rear of his carefully selected antique frames. The 'Pushman Room' is a legend in the American art world."

In 1932 Pushman was honored with a one-man show at the Galleries.Sixteen paintings were on display and all sold the opening day.The prices ranged from $3,500 up to $10,000 (the equivalent of more than $150,000 in 2009).The same year his painting "The Daughter of the Sheykh," which had won a silver medal in Paris in 1921, was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The winner of the 1936 art drawing at the Grand Central Art Galleries, Walter S. Gifford of AT&T, selected a Pushman still life of a Chinese statuette.

The 1940s and 1950s brought controversy and change to Pushman's world. In 1940 he sued the New York Graphic Society for reproducing a painting without his permission. While initially the ruling went against the painter, it was eventually reversed; the decision now protects artists' creative worksHe had often turned down buyers interested in his work, reportedly once refusing an offer of $6,000 for a small canvas; in 1942 became only the second painter in 117 years to refuse entry into the National Academy.  In 1958 the Grand Central Art Galleries, which had been Pushman's home since they opened in 1923, were forced out of the Grand Central Terminal. Eighty-one-year-old Pushman was present at the final reception at the Galleries' Terminal location, which was attended by more than 400 people.

Pushman died on February 13, 1966, in New York City. Three months later, Hulia Shaljian Pushman, his widow, followed him.

"I never planned to be a watercolor painter. A self-taught artist, I began painting in oils as a hobby after early
retirement from my job. Watercolor to me was a difficult and unforgiving medium. Then in 2006 I took a few
watercolor classes at a community center, and I was hooked. I found that painting in watercolors allows me
to create beauty out of ordinary objects using light and shadows. The fluid medium mixes in exciting and
often surprising ways on the paper and lets me paint the fine details that I love to capture.

After a friend told me she wanted to stay a while and visit one of my paintings, I realized that my goal as an
artist is to stir emotion within and bring pleasure to those who view my work. The best compliment is when
someone tells me one of my paintings made them smile. I hope you enjoy viewing my paintings as much as
I enjoyed creating them and that you will want to "stay awhile and visit.""

"I strive to show that watercolor can be bold, rich and dramatic.

I feel that when you are accustomed to seeing something in the same way day after day you seem to forget the beauty that is held within it. I feel as though I have the opportunity to take someone into a place they have seen before and give them a different perspective. I would like people to feel as if they could be part of another world; to see beauty and simplicity, within that complexity.

Everything has a voice that not everyone can hear, the form is the language the content the voice...

As an artist, I find it sometimes difficult to part with my work. My paintings are like my children and I feel that each has its own destiny. I believe that as artists, it is our gift to create and share our creations with others. I also believe that my work will travel where it needs to go and be seen by those who need to see it. Art is a valuable healing experience for both the creator and the observer and my art is what I am here to do.

Within the challenging media of watercolor, I am able to express my interpretation of Nature's unique beauty. I began painting landscapes and have enjoyed painting mist and valleys, homes and gardens. I found that my paintings reflected the way that I viewed the world - as from a distance. As I grew in my art, I became fascinated with the unusual, the odd little corners of a backyard, the world within the flowerbeds. I began studying the intricate details of these hidden places, like the layers of overlapping leaves and petals, the shadows and the water droplets. Retrospectively, I liken this to the increasing complexity of my own thoughts.

Looking at the darkness behind the petals, I became curious; wondering about the things I didn't normally consider when admiring a garden. As I began to scrutinize the backs of the petals and the complex placing of the stems and leaves, I realized that this intricacy was reflecting what I was seeing inside myself. I sensed that this journey was leading me to view a deeper part of my subconscious and imagination. Taking what was complicated and creating a visually simplified form allowed me to find dimensional complexity.

Fascinated with depth, shadow and movement, I found that the watercolor medium gave me a feeling of working with subconscious emotion, that the flower itself became a vehicle for color and form.

My inspiration begins at dawn, watching the sunrise on the cliffs near my home. Bathed in the new beginning of every day gives me a chance to hear my own thoughts and to really see all the true colors of Nature. Nature, represents for me, the design in life. I am intrigued by forms and the values held within. A flower shows everything from the seeds, stem, bud, and blossom, then returning to the earth to begin a new cycle of birth-life-death. Nature is ever changing; there is beauty to behold in every step. Within the bloom, you may travel deeper, into Nature, into yourself. Look under each petal to find the magic that is held within the shadow.

Each of us has the choice of simply seeing a flower or something much more. I am intrigued by the character I find in plants, something most would find unusual in such a traditionally passive subject. I love to take a flower and enhance its drama, which can allow you to view it in a completely different way. A small and delicate blossom, which would normally be unnoticed, can become intimidating or evoke an incredibly passionate response. Sometimes when I am painting the shapes and shadows of something as delicate as a datura, I can actually become uncomfortable with the images. These shadows are my subconscious, the folds under the petals.

"Florals" are what some will see when they look at my work. Does it match my couch? My carpet? Instead, I hope my art speaks to you, that you hear its voice. Everything in nature has a voice but not everyone can hear it. We are caught up in the external pushing and pulling in our lives and don't take the time to hear or see the signals of nature. We can become distracted and confused. I think I eliminate some of this by bringing the essence of the flowers into my paintings.

I am a self taught artist inspired by the stories of my family. I thought that it would not be possible to be a recognized woman artist. I developed my art while having a family, being a full time wife and mother.
Currently I am represented in Hong Kong, Atherton, CO, Palm Desert, CA, Seattle, WA, and have won numerous domestic and international awards, I have been published in numerous magazines. I believe in dreams."
