Qinghua Xiang - Qing Hua Xiang

Chinese 1976

Born in Yunyang Congqing in 1976, entered the Department of Oil Painting in Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1997, and has been teaching at the Chuanyin Chengdu Academy of Arts since 2001. Xiang Qinghua's pictures have a strong sense of composition, but the language of form is simple. The colors are basically flat colors, using the difference between warm and cold colors to create space and distance in the pictures. No extra illustration or strong spiritual pursuits. The characters are childish, the facial expression somewhat sluggish with a deformed intentional image, but the whole picture is mild among the low-key grey tones, as if covered by age. The simple and ordinary life covers up the world the artist personally desires – meditative nostalgia for childhood and quiet review of reality.

Statement

It is tedious for me to show a explicit synopsis of the story in artworks. I want to keep Japanese vagueness or ambiguity. Thereby, I’ll represent images that they cannot tell it is real or surreal, dawn or evening. If someone asks “which do you want to depict, smiling face or sad face?”, I’ll say “an ambiguous face different from being woodenly expressionless”. I try to get close to a image before defined words.

Kozo Izawa

Kozo Izawa consistently draws very simple, pared down images; girls or poinsettia stand in a space, where we cannot distinguish the time of day. The image is at once realistic and surrealistic. Girls seem to inhabit both the earthly and the spirit realms. Izawa has created an ambiguous and mysterious world where a clear meaning is elusive. His work is a mirror reflecting the viewer’s state of mind.

In 1955, Liquitex, the first water-based acrylic paint was developed in the United States, and rapidly spread throughout the art world. In Japan, acrylic paint became a popular medium used primarily by young artists at many exhibitions since 1970’s. Izawa was studying Western style painting in Kyoto City University during this time. As an ambitious young man in his twenties, he intended to be a pioneer of acrylic painting, shying away from the guidance of the oil painting masters.

In 1977, Izawa won a prize at Dokuritsu Exhibition, a leading group exhibition of Japanese art, and then officially beginning his career as an artist. In 1981, he received the excellence prize of Tokyo Central Museum Oil Painting Grand Prize Exhibition. In 1984, he was selected with Kinutani Koji, Tamura Noriko, and the other artists, in the Japanese Emerging Artist Exhibition, and winning the Award of Excellence in 1988. Since 1985, he has received the Yasui Award Exhibition, the most prestigious art award for Japanese society in those days. In 1991, he was recognized as the artist to assume the next generation by Kyoto city.

He was selected with Takayama Tatsuo, Nakayama Tadahiko and other leading artists to show in Ryo-yo-no-me (Eye combining Western and Eastrn civilization) Exhibition in 1990, a forum founded by Kawakita Michiaki, one of the best Japanese art critics. He has energetically exhibited not only in the Kansai region, his home area, but also in Tokyo, in the 1990s and later; with solo exhibits in venues like Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi in 1995, and Kinokuniya Gallery in 2010.

Izawa’s work is included in the permanent collections of: Kyoto prefecture and the other local authorities, Hoki Museum, Kobe College Junior and Senior High School.

Many artists have made work that communicates their thoughts and feelings about the social issues of their time. My works are in the same line and I hope that my works make small positive changes by giving people interest and stimulation. The theme of my work is to represent complex, ambiguous and uncomfortable relationships between man and other lives. Nature and animals has been an object of art for a long time. And, it will be continued until the fall of human being, although the point of view has been changed. There are
lots of living creatures on the earth. The human is on the top of the ecological pyramid now and can manage all kinds of our fellow creatures. However, it is getting worse for certain.I always think about the balance, when I work over my ideas. I am using the strong visual parts and detailed expression to attract public gaze and then I want to give stimulation to people by the sensitive visual parts and moderate expression.

"Qu Muzi paints scenes of mystery and wonder, usually featuring a single figure in a dreamlike setting. Her treatment of light and colour is muted, with an occasional flash of brilliant colour.

She pays close attention to texture and design, which complement the careful composition of her paintings.

There is a wistful sense of fleeting beauty, tinged with sadness, in Qu Muzi’s paintings.

Themes of love and memory, peace and nostalgia, can be discerned.

Qu Muzi is a young artist from Liaoning, NE China. This is her first exhibition in HK."

Rebekah Bogard received her MFA from the University of Nevada Las Vegas in 2003.  She received a BFA from the University of Wyoming in Laramie in 2000.  She is currently an Associate Professor in Ceramics at University of Nevada Reno as well as a studio artist.
She has received numerous awards including being named an “Emerging Artist” by both the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts and Ceramics Monthly Magazine.  She has been awarded a residency at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts.  In addition she is a two-time recipient of the Nevada Fine Arts Council Fellowship, as well as receiving the “Best of Show” in several national art competitions.   Her work has shown in several solo and group exhibitions nation wide.  Moreover, her work has been reviewed in publications such as Art in America, LA Times, Ceramics Monthly Magazine, Clay Times Magazine, and Artweek.

I employ fictional animals in my artwork to explore the narrative of my life and my own personal history as they provide me with both anonymity and security to the secrets I reveal.  I enjoy utilizing animals because they are beautiful and mysterious creatures, vulnerable to relations with humans.  This susceptibility gives them a sense of benevolence that is often lacking in human associations.  I use this vulnerability as a source of power.  It takes a brave and confident person or animal to make themselves vulnerable, for they must have the strength to withstand the consequences.
The narratives are purposefully ambiguous as there are many ways to interpret a single piece.  Some pieces look cute, sweet and innocent, but upon closer inspection, one realizes that the piece is conceptually more complicated.  They may be read simultaneously as happy-go-lucky as well as melancholic and out of place.  I blend the beautiful with the sad, fantasy with reality, idealism with truth as well as the sexual with the innocent. I decidedly leave these compelling dualities open for the viewer to draw their own conclusions.

The fictional creatures juxtaposed with non-fictional animals are there to turn the world up-side-down and to leave the viewer off balance.  By changing the rules of engagement, anything is possible in the world I create.  Fantasies become realities and dreams become actuality.  Concrete gender roles no longer exist.  Females can be more like males and males can be more like females.

As a female artist, I am interested in gender and how specific gender roles are assigned to both girls and women.  I exploit normative female iconography such as flowers, butterflies, and curving-sensuous lines as well as “feminine” color combinations such as pinks and purples.  I embrace female sexuality, vulnerability and romance not as the stereotypical taboo, but as an empowered re-contextualization.  Through these creatures, I embrace and reclaim female stereotypes, powerful messages relevant to today’s world.

Dale has established himself over a period of six years as being one of the most respected and individual artists on the London art scene. Collectors and buyers have appreciated his distinctively direct and passionate style internationally.

Dale was born in Lancashire. He studied at Blackburn College of Art and then went on to achieve his Bachelor of Fine Art degree at Middlesex University.

As a student Dale won the Apthorp Fund for young artists and then went on to win the Liquitex Student Award in the USA. As a result, he was able to exhibit at the Academy of Arts in New York and in the Cable and Wireless exhibition in London.

After a break from his artwork, when he pursued a career in the music industry, Dale returned to painting and was quickly featured in the TV show ‘A Brush With Fame’. In 2006 Dale was a finalist in the both Pride in the House and Liberte D’expression competitions.

Dale had his first solo show, Echoes And Exorcisms, at Signal Gallery Hoxton, London in April 2008. This show was extremely successful and he rapidly became one of the leading up-and- coming artists in the London Urban Art scene. This led him to being invited to take part in a number of festivals across the UK including 2008 the Supercans Festival and also Upfest in Bristol in 2008 and 2009, where his outdoor work created quite a stir. More recently, he has contributed to the Street Art scene with a series of striking and dramatic woodcuts prints that he has pasted up in London and Europe.

Dales' next two solo shows ‘Heart In Darkness' (2009) and 'Arcana' (2010) were both very well received, leading to a large amount of press coverage, including a thirty page feature in Mynameis magazine. His most recent solo show ‘Semi Detached’ at Signal Gallery saw a considerable progression in his style and technique, as well as being a very personal statement.

He has contributed works to several high profile charitable events, notably the Street Art awards where his work was chosen to feature in an article in The Independent newspaper and on the BBC. Dale’s work has been seen in a number of group shows internationally in Paris, Berlin and in the USA.

In 2012 Dale has been busy on a number of large scale projects as well as preparing for his recent solo show, 'Moreish' at Signal Gallery in November. This show was featured in a number of press outlets, including Juxtapoz, Arrested Motion and The Londonist. Outside he has been working on large pieces at Sun, Sea and Spray in Blackpool, at the Whitecross Street Party, at the Liquitex art event in West London and in Zetland House, Hoxton.

1983 – Born in Chongqing, China
2006 – Graduated from Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute
2009 – Graduated Master degree of Oil painting Department in Sichuan Fine Arts Institute

Meng Yangyang was born in 1983 and graduated from Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and received a master degree. In 2006, her work was outstanding in the China Asian Art Weel in Lodon. The works of Meng Yangyang was strongly admired by galleries in London and people from the Palm Beach International Design Expo. She is one of the first Chinese artists, whose artwork is not influenced by President Mao’s Totalitarianism, and yet, these young artists are emerging in a country that is rapidly growing and changing. Western culture has influenced the character of Meng Yangyang and the young artists like her; their artwork reflects how china is turning into a brand new and well developed country. However, the insecurity extended from this changing country is the reason why that young people are trying to find themselves in the fantasy world.

In Meng Yangyang’s work, the hands and the eyes of the figure are often exaggerated; the intention is to convey that strong thirst to communicate with the world. The message in her work reflects her own situation in the art market where she gets pressure from, and seeing artists at her age facing the early profit collide between interpersonal relationships. Delicately depict the wild origin that was hidden in her heart.

"Figures are the only things that I have ever painted .I am interested in the human .

In my painting I try to find what has always gone on in myself.

I create my own space out of time and out of reality .

I am only asking question :”what make the personality is?”"
