Lynn Muir

Lynn sculpts whimsical figures in wood, mainly from driftwood gathered from the beach near her home in Cornwall after a strong south westerly wind. Her pieces are characterised by their humour and by their simple shapes. Their forms are shaped with saws and sanding tools, the wood itself often suggesting the figure, its size, stance or hairstyle. Detailing is added with her fine painting, of facial features and decorative patterning of clothes, frequently jumpers which are “just like one I had”.

Lynn was born in East Anglia and trained at Colchester School of Art in Illustration. Her workshop overlooking the Atlantic was established when she moved to Cornwall in 1986.

Mitch Griffiths

Mitch Griffiths uses a traditional, almost forgotten style of painting, inspired by the light and composition of Old Master paintings, but he uses this style to depict the issues concerning 21st-century British society. His main subject is the transient and throwaway nature of contemporary culture, which is held in stark contrast to the permanence and indelibility of oil paint on canvas.

Mitch Griffiths

Mitch Griffiths was born in Nuneaton in 1971 and had an early passion for drawing that was fostered by his school, which he represented in various art competitions. Planning for a career in art, he enrolled at South Devon College, completing a Diploma in Graphic Design in 1987. This was followed by a Higher National Diploma in Illustration at Southampton Institute. His initial work as a commercial illustrator, on projects that ranged from magazine covers to murals, was supplemented by a variety of temporary jobs, such as sheet metal work, which brought in more reliable income.

Griffiths' first artistic success came unexpectedly, in 1994. An avid boxing fan, he painted a portrait of Chris Eubank and sent a photograph of it to Eubank's agent, Barry Hearn. The boxer was delighted with the piece, wanting to use the image to promote his matches, and he initially commissioned a series of pictures and then offered Griffiths a job. Eubank became his patron for the next three years, setting up a studio for him at his business centre in Hove.

Through Eubank, Griffiths met the entrepreneur Terry Johnson, who owned a luxury retreat in Cornwall called Hustyns, where many boxers trained. Griffiths became artist-in-residence and for the next five years created over 100 paintings to be displayed at the centre. He also helped to set up the Bishop Phillpotts Gallery in Truro, Cornwall, holding three solo exhibitions there in 2001 and 2002.

During these years Griffiths' distinctive style of figurative painting in oils began to emerge. He immersed himself in the culture of the Old Masters, reading widely on art history and making frequent visits to London's museums to examine seminal works. Returning to his studio, he would try out their painting techniques, their composition and lighting, toiling until he had honed his abilities to a level where he could replicate and then advance creatively from his models.

While his artistic language owes a debt to the past, in content Griffiths rigorously addresses the issues of the twenty-first century. Large, complex canvases, packed with detail, expose the immoralities and pretences of our time. Many of his images appear to echo familiar religious iconography. However, their symbolism reflects a modern quest for redemption from the overriding self-obsession and consumerism of contemporary society, with its vanity and greed, addictions and needless suffering.

In 2001 Griffiths entered the National Portrait Gallery BP Portrait Award with Armoured Heart. The piece was chosen for the exhibition's promotional poster, which resulted in wide exposure for his work across London. His first solo show in London was mounted at the Enid Lawson Gallery in Kensington in 2002. During this period Halcyon Gallery became one of his favourite haunts, following an exhibition of work by the painter Robert Lenkiewicz that caught his interest. A chance conversation with a gallery representative and an opportunity to show the sketchbook he was carrying resulted in what has become an enduring creative collaboration; Halcyon Gallery started permanently representing Griffiths in 2004.

His first show at the gallery, Reality (2006), examined the power of brand names in such works as Twenty-first Century Boy a portrayal of a figure in Calvin Klein underpants with a Coca-Cola trademark branded into his skin. Credit cards encircle the man's head like a crown of thorns and his chest and arms bear cut marks that suggest self-harm.

The Promised Land, another major solo show, opened in April 2010 with 25 paintings that delved into the pain and contradictions of modern British life. Griffiths took the Union Jack as a recurrent theme, wrapping figures in it to raise provocative questions about patriotism and identity. He draws attention to society's fixation on appearance in The Fitting Room, to its voyeurism and inconstancy in The Muse is Dead.

Griffiths' exhibition Iconostasis, taking its concept from the screen of icons dividing the sanctuary from the nave of an Eastern Orthodox church, will be launched in 2012 and will feature portraits of such famous figures as Ray Winstone, Sir Bob Geldof and Keira Knightley.

Johan Andersson

After graduating from Central St.Martins in 2008 Johan Andersson became the youngest ever person to be shortlisted for the BP Portrait Award and named as The Independent’s top 20 Artists 2008. His selected work was displayed at the National Portrait Gallery and in the same year he was also selected for the Jerwood Contemporary Painters prize.
Since then Andersson has gone onto exhibit work along side artists including Anish Kapoor, Tracy Emin, Sarah Lucas, Gavin Turk and Howard Hodgkin, and in 2010 was selected to exhibit work in support of BreakThrough Breast Cancer at The V&A Museum.
He has exhibited and sold on the international art market including The Scope Art Fair in Basel and Cutlog in Paris. His work has also been displayed in major London Underground stations including Bond Street, Baker street and South Kensington.
In 2010 Andersson was selected by Sky Arts as the ‘one to watch’ young British Contemporary Artist to feature on a 6 week Documentary called ‘Art of Survival’ broadcasted July 2011. Johan was recently selected as top 100 most influential creatives by TimeOut as well as being featured on a TED talk.
The climax of the STOLEN FACES series was a solo show at the elusively private Long Gallery of Englefield house in May 2012 where the paintings of individuals marginalised by society replaced 17th century portraits of prominent earls and countesses.

BP Portrait Award 2007
This portrait is of his friend Tamara; their friendship adds a silent tension which is revealed in the shyness of Tamara’s demeanour. ‘This insecurity of posing nude,’ he says ‘is evident in the awkwardness of the pose.’ Johan says he was trying to challenge attitudes to voyeurism through his portrait.

BRAND FOR LIFE is a reminder of the realities and effects of our consumerism, seeking to redefine iconography and to challenge perspectives by juxtaposing western branding to a wider story. The purpose is not to condemn corporate culture, but rather to reconnect popular products to the process of making them, highlighting its human cost.
With the explosion of social media, we live in a culture of self-elevation, performance and adoration rather than tangible accomplishment. BRAND FOR LIFE aims to challenge the superficiality of over-commercialisation, not by shock but by understanding our connection to a wider humanity and by giving these characters a voice. The paintings bear no secrets, and are stripped down to just one core product. The brands shown represent consumer icons as a whole and the paintings are not commenting on these brands in themselves.

STOLEN FACES seeks to give representation and visibility, to those who do not conform to the artificial and image conscious (attributes so often propagated by onscreen and printed hegemony). In recognising the capacity of the global media (in line with public receptiveness) to distort ontological perceptions, the paintings stand both in defiance and pride, celebrating diversity in the knowledge that we are all uniquely made.
The presence of STOLEN FACES is an expression that encourages intimacy, whilst challenging continually emerging advertising milieus. In capturing both actuality and the elusive ethereal, the fusion of subtle technicolour has the effect of making ordinary details appear extraordinary. The subjects retain both an ephemeral and intense presence, provoking cognitive dissonance. By its nature, this encourages the viewer to confront their preconceptions of identity in a manner that is uniquely uncompromising.

David Mesguich

David Mesguich's work is neither overdone nor artificial. "It immerses itself in the direct prolonging of a story, a way of life".
He turns his gaze to our world-cities, through which we construct our thoughts, identities, individual existences and even poetic speech.
It is not that we find ourselves succumbing to the power of denial; the desire to reject the universe in which we are always, and undeniably a part of. On the contrary, we must seek to get through it as we can, to pass by the rifts, to follow through the arteries of our existence, to explore its folds.
It's a question of making live the movement of an eye which uses trickery with the objectives of CCTV, which challenges the modes of control and which tries to open the perspectives of a singular vision.
This passes through the complete methodological process of the Image, between graffiti, photography, video and ink drawings-paintings.
Here photography plays a matrix role, a huge collection of instants and situations in which we can draw forms, open spaces, the flare, the transparency of windows and shadows that will feed not only an imaginary framework of post-modernity, but also a representative construction that lean against the history of paintings and cinema.

Jean Cristofol , philosophy teacher.

"My recent body of work,Tomorrow Land, is a series of paintings and sculptures that contrasts the failures of modern industry with the my belief in science and technology to change our world for the better.

The first group of paintings start with the simple juxtaposition of a large shadow over an aerial view of abandoned locations. The shadows cast are of things that symbolize what I refer to as, "Aspirational Technology". These are things that represent, or at one point represented, the progress of our technological civilization and the glory which a future in space would bring. The locations depicted are towns, neighborhoods and population centers which have been recently abandoned due to industrial negligence. These areas represent the hubris of our species and lack of foresight that has been so catastrophic over the history of human civilization. For me these works embody my optimism along with a realism about what we as a species are capable of.

What is art for the viewer but a catalyst for inspiration? I want to make work which inspires and engages the viewer in what I truly believe is important and what drives me. I believe in space exploration and the pursuit of technology as a vehicle to the future. There will be bumps along the way, because we are flawed. Some advanced technology will be used irresponsibly or simply for evil. However, the progression of science and technology also represents the evolution of our species. We are the first species just smart enough to evolve ourselves outside of natural selection and Darwinian evolution. Do we need to be smarter? Yes. But we don't have to wait millions of years to get there naturally. We can do that through our ingenuity. Creating a body of work that can open a dialog about these ideas is what I am working towards with my art."

Francis Deransart

Yrjo Edelmann

Yrjö Edelmann
Born 1941 in Helsinki, Finland

"Reality or fantasy? What is the difference between fantasy and fact, between night and day, between torment and transports of delight? Yrjö Edelmann’s pictures are frequently located in the territory between dream and experience, in a vacuum where the eye wanders through a labyrinth of almost infinite proportions.
For centuries artists have endeavoured to delude the eye of the observer by conjuring forth a trompe-l’oeil image. And so too does Edelmann, with his wrinkled wrapping paper — storm-tossed seas that may just as readily be clouds sailing through a clear blue sky, or mysteriously undulating packages.
Ever since he stepped onto the stage as a thirty-something artist, Yrjö Edelmann has devoted himself to oil painting and graphic art. More recently his works have caught the eye of both public and critics, not only here at home in Sweden, but abroad as well, with exhibitions in New York, Tokyo and Paris. Since 1976 his works have been on display continuously in the USA.
Yrjö Edelmann was born in 1941 and moved from Helsinki in Finland to Sweden with his family ten years later. He started to draw at an early age, initially in comic strip magazines, and worked for many years as an illustrator with the publishers Åhlén & Åkerlund in Stockholm. While there he produced several book covers and other works in the magazine genre. Towards the end of the 1950s he studied freehand drawing at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. Influenced by French surrealism with its irrational, dreamlike motifs, he developed his own pictorial language and also experimented with hyperrealism before becoming increasingly engrossed in his packages, wrapping paper and pieces of string.
His paintings play with shape and shade, with proportions and the properties of colour. His creations challenge our senses, capturing the sensation of hovering between what truly exists and what is merely the shadow of a dream. "

Shaina will be attending The New York Academy of Art this Fall to earn her MFA in painting. She graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2011 with a BFA in painting and currently lives and works in Philadelphia, PA. Her work is primarily figurative and her obsession with the human form makes sure she never strays far from her favorite subject. Her large oil paintings are glazed with many layers of sheer color, creating a luminous effect. In addition to oil, she works in chalk pastel and digital photography.

Shaina's Flesh Experiment 117 has been chosen for this year's Art of the State exhibition at the PA State Museum in Harrisburg. In August, Shaina will be participating in a group show called "NIGHT: The Different Painting" at Brooklyn FireProof in Brooklyn, NYC. Pentimenti Gallery in Philadelphia included two pastel drawings by Shaina in their group show, "Global Conscious, Local Artists" (June/July 2013). Shaina also participated in a group show at FWS Gallery in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square in 2013. MAREK OKRASSA. Born in 1975, he studied painting in the studio of professor M.Swieszewski and drawing in the studio of Maria Targowska. Okrassa was twice awarded with a grant from the Ministry of Culture and Arts and in 1999 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts with a special award. He was awarded with the Silver Spur in 2000 and he received an honourable mention of Franciszka Eibisch Foundation in 2004 at the National Museum of Warsaw. "Is it possible for a painting to be simultaneously a deep sociological analysis of the human being and a complex poetic metaphor? It proves that yes, indeed. Marek Okrassa seeks out for inspiration for his art by visiting crowded beaches, popular cafes and amusement parks. He observes various human types and tries to follow the typical patterns of behaviour. Numerous sketches, drawings and notes are being made, from which emerges a complicated web of interhuman relationships. In such a public places people move as if they were free particles, but the painter, being a keen observer, recollects some logic out of the chaos of urban life. Okrassa is fascinated with the hidden aspects of the life of a common man. It is the way of how this anonymous world becomes concrete, well known and acceptable. Perhaps it is a personal way of familiarising oneself with the reality, of translating the new into a complete artistic show. This is the simultaneous creation of a complex sociological fresco and a metaphorical image of the reality. The world of Marek Okrassa pictures, due to the talent and the intelligent narration, may tell us much about man." J.Napiórkowska
